Problem with laptop

I've recently had a problem with my laptop. All I've been running is Opera and Amarok, but I don't think they are the problem. All that happens is randomly the screen goes black, and then back to normal again, but I can do anything. I can't move the mouse or type anything. I have to turn it off by the power button. I have no idea what is causing this, because I haven't installed anything big recently...

Re: Problem with laptop

It may be a hardware problem.

When the system doesn't respond, can you kill xorg with ctrl-alt backspace, or reset the system with a magic sysrq (which you have to enable in /etc/sysctl.conf) or as root temporarily:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

If it does not respond to the above controls, and you find nothing in logfiles from the time you have these crashes, it is probably a hardware issue (since your drivers havn't changed, or have they?).

Re: Problem with laptop

Killing Xorg doesn't help, because the keyboard doesn't respond. Where can I find logfiles to check?

Re: Problem with laptop

Sometimes, xorg doesn't pass the keys on, but it can still be killed with M-C backspace, or SysRq k.

various files in /var/log  particularly everything.log.

but since you haven't changed anything, it's probably a hardware issue.
