Can anyone recommend a good 3d modelling program? I'm looking for something easy to learn and decently powerful/functional. I already know about Blender, and it's not what I'm looking for.

Some years ago I used Cinema 4D on Windows (Version 8 was current at that time). It was fairly easy to use and I completed successfully a halfway decent animation with it. (Took me about 3 months to create and about 72h to render on a 1800+ for 6 minutes in PAL...)
I created a hallway with some rooms, so I used it to design things like lamps, doors, a sofa, beds, chairs, a radio, a cup, CDs... and it was very comfortable to use so-called HyperNURBS to create good-looking models while only modifying a low-poly model or using transformers to bend the arm of a desk lamp.
A friend swears by Maya, but I failed miserably despite having a huge tutorial and a little prior experience with modelling. But frankly, the last time I did something 3D was using UnrealED in 2004 and save some image editing and web design, I haven't done anything artistical since then. When I tried to get used to bender, I lacked the motivation to learn the interface.

Wings3D is easy to learn, or at least i found it so. Art Of Illusion is another impressive option. Neither is as powerful as blender, but it depends what you want to do. Wings3D is good for CADISH stuff, because it gives you more control over dimensions. Art Of Illusion may be better for artistic stuff, as its more freefrom, IIRC.
I used both for a while before I finally decided it was worth learning blender. So I learned blender and haven't done ANY 3D work since. *sigh*
There's a program called SESAME that was created in my grad lab that is probably easier to learn than anything else available, but I don't think sources are available... not even sure if a binary is.

There's KPovModeler also. It's too bad that Blender isn't going to work for you. It's simply the most powerful free modeler there is.

I've been following and using Blender religiously on and off for over 3 years, end-result similar to Dusty It's the Ardour of 3D Graphics, period.
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

I've been using 3Ds max and find it's quite a complex program to learn. Done quite a few tutorials and still feel like I only know the tip of the iceberg.

I've been searching for a good 3D modeling program all night and I have to say I am relieved to find Blender! It's great to see open-source run off in wild directions like Blender has.
