A pseudo-thumbnail JPG of a quick-and-dirty attempts at giving my Arch desktop a carbon fibre feel:
Original 1280x1024 PNG available here. It looks better without the JPG artifacts.
Assembled/edited using The GIMP, with the carbon fibre 'borrowed' from elsewhere (thank you GIS ). Suggestions welcome on how to improve it.
BTW, it looks really good under KDE when you configure KDesktop to use a horizontal gradient of #003082-#6C8BB9 with intensity blending.

Here's a drop shadow for you...
Full 1280x1024 PNG here.
I might try the glow later on. What I really wanted to do was give the carbon fibre a raised look, sort of like the Arch logo was extruded from behind and then enameled onto the raised surface. Anyone have any ideas on how to do that in The GIMP?

Yeah! the second version is much better, very cool

Hey there, I also like your second revision better than the first one. Also, I like the concept with the brushed/pinhole look as the background texture - great concept!
Cheers
EDIT: @staticvoid - your version is really sweet as well! :-)

Yes please staticvoid, I did mean to ask for a bigger widescreen version of yours too. Ideally 1680x1050

I don't have a non-shaded original of the carbon fibre background, so I couldn't really stretch the wallpaper as I'd wanted to. Nevertheless, here's a shot at a widescreen 1680x1050 version.
I've also uploaded a smaller file of the second 1280x1024 PNG. The image itself is identical, but the filesize is only 282k vs. the original 325k. Ah, the wonders of Ken Silverman's PNGOUT program...

Cool. Can you make the second with a dark green background instead of black? Would be awesome.

Here's a reduced-size jpeg preview of the green version:
Full png file here.
You didn't say if you wanted a widescreen version, nor did you specify how dark of a green you wanted, so please forgive me if I didn't hit the marks exactly.

Oh, sorry about that. 1600x1200 would be very nice (or any other 4:3 format). The green is good though

This is 1280x960 and should scale up to what you need. Glad the green works, though.

I like the very first version's logo with the contours (gives it a happy cartoony look), however, I feel dizzy when I look at the carbon texture. Could you replace it with a plain background (ar a gradient one)?

That kind of defeats the purpose of the Carbon Fibre look, doesn't it? No worries, I know what you're getting at. Let me work on that a bit to come up with something that does the logo justice.
Meanwhile, I came up with a rather darkish "cobblestone" variant while I was playing with the background:
Full 1280x1024 PNG file here. I also applied a bit of bump mapping to the "happy cartoony" version of the logo. Feedback would be most appreciated.
