After an upgrade the kernel failed to boot. I finally figured out that /dev/hda had been renamed to /dev/sdc. This is a pretty major change, I had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab - why wasn't there any warning? What is the reason for getting rid of /dev/hd*?

Didn't that change happen like... a year ago? I thought IDE disks are named /dev/sdx by default for some time now. And there was a warning. At least for intel chipsets: http://www.archlinux.org/news/273/
Which kernel version did you have before the update?

The problem appeared after upgrading 2.6.24.3-1 to kernel26-2.6.24.3-3 (same kernel, newer build). I've updated my system several times over the past year, so why has it only taken effect now? Could I have had old device files lying around that somehow got deleted this time?
