Can't install anything after new Pacman install.

I'm installing Arch on a computer at work. I used the install cd. Booted up fine. Ran a

pacman -Syu

updated pacman, ran pacman -Sc then updated the mirrorlist file as I like for the servers. Then ran

pacman -Syu

again to update the packages.

Now if I try a

pacman -S xorg

it will download everything but a few files. Why? I can't get it to install gnome either (downloads everything but 3 or 4 files). Says bad md5sum and doesn't even begin to download the package. Then it asks if I want to delete the package.

Also I'm trying to install firefox3 so I ran

pacman -Sy firefox3

and I get

"error: 'firefox3': not found in sync db"

I downloaded the tar.bz2, unzipped it into ~/abs/local/firefox then tried to go into the directory and run

./configure

but gives me an unrecognized command.

Also if I run pacman -Syu on my laptop, same thing, downloads all files except a few. It never fully completes.

Any help solving my problem would be great! I have internet connectivity at both places.

but the list just keeps going on. It's all the modules compiled in the kernel.

Re: Can't install anything after new Pacman install.

Try using a different mirror. The pacman mirrorlist file will pick the first available mirror from the top down, so try changing which server is at the top (what i do is comment them all out and put some uncommented ones at the top so that the order/organisation isn't mucked up).

Try cleaning the cache followed by a sync with an extra 'y':

pacman -Scc
pacman -Syyu

Then try installing xorg again.

You need to edit the /etc/pacman.conf file to enable the [unstable] repository (comment out the two appropriate lines) and then you can install firefox3.

Still a no go. It will download all the packages, but then checks for package integrity.

Re: Can't install anything after new Pacman install.

Force your kernel upgrade with the -f flag. Then do as dyscoria suggested again.

I'm still a little new to Arch, and really to the linux environment. What command would I use?

pacman -Sf linux-headers

?

Also, will I need to recompile the new kernel, or will the upgrade install the new kernel for me?

I've only been using linux for about a year and a few months. big_smile

Thanks guys.

Re: Can't install anything after new Pacman install.

Also I'm trying to install firefox3 <SNIP>

Firefox3 is in the unstable repository. You'll have to edit /etc/pacman.conf and uncomment that repository if you want to install it.

As you what you've described about trying to compile it, read the wiki pages about ABS and makepkg to understand how they work. No offense intended, but you sound like your trying to bite off more than you can chew. smile

I ran this, but it gives alot of errors. grep: No file or directory plus a bunch of other errors. /lib/kerne26/... No file or directory

Also it seems to think I'm using LILO, but in fact, I'm using Grub.  And then hangs at Generating Modules.

I got all the data off my laptop using a knoppix disc because I couldn't boot into the new kernel, tried an arch root=/dev/sda4 but it wouldn't recognize my touch pad. No big deal if I have to reformat, but it would be just a small pain.

I got firefox3 installed, but that's the least of the concerns right now considering I can't even boot up my machine into the linux environment. =]

Though the machine for work, I upgraded the kernel just fine. Still timing out on certain packages: ncurses tzdata and some others. I can post them later since I have xorg running now and firefox on the current desktop for work.

Any ideas about my laptop though?
