Re: dependency free login manager?

I find the plain login console to be more useful. I don't need to login into X every time I switch on my machine, so having a console before X starts is quite handy. Besides, X is just a "startx" away.

Re: dependency free login manager?

I use qingy because with it you can start X from different vts with different options (i.e. startx -- -layout dualhead) and still have a graphical login environment (qingy itself uses the framebuffer, not X), you can also start more X sessions on different vts at the same time. But beware that there are still some (minor) issues with the Arch qingy package, but the mantainer was at it lately.

EDIT: With the latest qingy version (quite some old, yes) I had never problems stability wise, it is very stable (you have to chose the right framebuffer, though), the problems on Arch are configuration related.

There is also the very minimalistic and simple xdm. Not much for the eyes, but it does the job.

The only suggestion I've gotten so far is Slim, which looks nice, but I was wondering if there are any other relatively dependency-free login managers out there?

Also just to make sure, I don't HAVE to use a login manager right? I can just log in vc1 and have startx run automatically after login right? A login manager would be nice though, to have graphical settings selections n stuff as opposed to knowing all the options and doing it textually. That's kind of why I was looking for an alternative to Slim as well, because you simply use different username logins to achieve different options, ie) shut down and stuff.

There is also Enter its in AUR, but it's still very early devolopment. And you need to make the rc-script yourself. But it does work. More simple than SLiM but not faster.

Re: dependency free login manager?

You might have a long wait!  I don't know if E17 will ever be considered finalized but stability has never been a problem for me.  I've used E16 in the past and it's supposed to be more stable but I'm using E17 now on three computers and they're all working great.  Lightweight, fast and pretty too.  I've only had one problem with a battery module that didn't show the correct charge left on the laptop battery but that wasn't anything serious.  With the constant updates that pressh is doing something minor might get messed up on occasion but don't let that scare you off.

As far as being finalized, even KDE and Gnome are constantly changing but are considered more stable than E17.

Re: dependency free login manager?

Start X at boot
It ask me for the login/password on the terminal and do the "startx" for me. I prefer not to logout when X is killed.
