Mplayer prevents X from blanking

I've got the following in my xorg.conf:

Option         "StandbyTime" "10"
Option         "SuspendTime" "20"
Option         "OffTime"     "30"

and usually it works fine, but if I run mplayer my monitor fails to blank. Both xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver will kick in at the correct time, but again, no blanking. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Re: Mplayer prevents X from blanking

this is a feature, not a bug: would you like your screen to blank when you are watching a movie, long time not touching mouse, keyboard, joystick etc?

Re: Mplayer prevents X from blanking

If you really want to disable this feature, you can run

xset +dpms

.

If on the contrary you want the added feature of preventing xscreensaver from kicking in during a movie, mplayer has a specific -stop-xscreensaver option

My problem isn't that X fails to blank while mplayer is running, but that it will continue to not blank until I restart X (long after I've killed/quit mplayer).

I find if you close mplayer improperly (ie. through a kill signal), then the screensaver settings are not restored. However, if you close it using your WM, then things are usually restored.

Yeah, I rarely use kill signals, I usually just close mplayer by typing 'Q' but I have this problem regardless of which method I use.

Re: Mplayer prevents X from blanking

I built mplayer-svn today and doesn't have this problem. I'm thinking that it's not because of this version of mplayer, but because it was built against recent libraries. Try making a new package and see if it helps.

I built mplayer-svn and it does seem to be working correctly so I think you may be right.

Re: Mplayer prevents X from blanking

I was just wondering if this issue was related to mplayer, looks it definitively was. smile
