Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

My conky tells me that Opera is using 32% of my 747MiB of RAM! I always use Opera because it used to use LESS than Firefox. What is going on? Is it the pluginwrapper?

EDIT: Well, I restarted it and it is using about 5% and growing a little bit at a time. I previously had it open for a few hours. My new question is: Is that used RAM actually being used properly or is it memory-leaking?

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

try pressing F12 followed by U.
see if the memory usage stops increasing then.
what you do is disabling the plugins, they can be reactivated by pressing F12 followed by U again smile

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

I don't think the plugin is making a difference. It's still increasing very slowly.

Stonecrest: Could you explain the point of your graph? It looks very interesting and I would like to know how it's relevant to Opera eating my memory. The only thing I can pull from it is that IE8b, Safari3 and IE7 are inferior.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

I forgot to mention that you have to restart your browser to get the plugins out of the memory.
try then. the memory usage wold still increase, but it shouldn't increase as much relative to how many, and which pages you visit.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

I presume the graph (showing FF2 performing on par with Opera and FF3b4 performing better than Opera) was posted because you said "I always use Opera because it used to use LESS than Firefox."

I doubt the nspluginwrapper would have much of an effect unless you're viewing flash content.

Do you have a swap partition? I don't and everything gets cached instead of swapped out so RAM usage stays very high (I'm pretty sure this is swap related anyway). I'm using FF3b4 and it uses 160MB RAM, which on my system is normal.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

I do have a swap partition that is about 1Gig vs my 768MB of RAM. My whole system is using 55% of RAM and 0% of swap, which I don't think is abnormal; I'm just amazed at how much is just Opera.

My Firefox2 uses about 150-170MB usually. Opera right now is using 170MB, which just seems very odd; I could swear that it was super-lightweight when I used to use it next to Firefox and IE. Maybe it's an Opera9.5 thing?

Opera = proprietary turd!! big_smile

Ah maybe the fact that its a beta is the culprit. I think the earlier FF3 builds were terrible when it came to RAM usage.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

That might be it. Unless someone posts another idea, I'll accept that as fact. Though, I would like to see that graph that stonecrest posted include Opera 9.25, just to see if I'm crazy.

I was just worried that there was a memory leak or something and that if I left it on, it might crash my system or something.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

I'm having crashes on rare occasions with 9.5, it was always rosy with 9.25 - less the flash and java.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

Re: Wow. Opera is using a LOT of RAM.

well, 9.5 is in its current state only a development snapshot, so there are improvements to be made, and maybe some of the new features are to blame too?

well, that's the point - it's in development.
