colored man-pages with aterm

Hi, when I read manpages on the virtual consoles (f1-f6) they're colored, when I read them under X I'm only getting the monochrome output.
I'm using aterm as my terminal emulator and I have $TERM set to xterm. So I figured setting $TERM to urxvt should help. Well it didn't and I've been through many possibilities for $TERM now but nothing did the trick, still I'm only getting the monochrome manpages.
So could someone please help me what I'm missing here?
thx in advance :>

Re: colored man-pages with aterm

Well thx, but I am not looking for this kind of coloring.. my main goal is not to get manpages somewhat colored in X colors but more to figure out why $TERM is seemingly being ignored.

edit: whoops, I apparantly have opened this thread in the newbie corner.. so if a mod sees this, feel free to move this post to a better place.
FYI (if someone cares :>) I just tried xterm, xterm-color, rxvt, rxvt-color, linux and they don't have any effect on the output of man. I'm either retardid or I'm missing something here. I hope it's the latter.. :>
