System dies with XFCE running

Hello,

I have a weird problem. I have Arch installed on an old HP notebook (Omnibook XE3 ~930 MHz) and XFCE. If I don't start XFCE everything works fine, but if I start XFCE the system "dies" after some time. I hear the Notebook running, but the screen is black, mouse and keyboard aren't working. In this state I'm not able to connect via ssh or ping the notebook. Also the log doesn't say anything helpful.
I checked for overheating and memory damage, but it seems that the hardware is working fine.
What could be the problem? Can it be caused by a running (java) application?

Thanks
