I'm not using a router, though--direct connect to a cable modem with an rj45. Does that make a difference?

Your cable modem is almost certainly handing out IP addresses via dhcp, but as in the post above, you may define a static IP for testing purposes. Get the IP range that your router is using, perhaps from your other computer. Plug your other computer into your modem and make sure you can get on the net. If it is running windows, for example, you may easily open a run dialog and enter

C:\ ipconfig /all

Take that info, write it down, power cycle the modem and do as daf suggested. Post back with your results.

There is also a chance that your cable modem does not like the MAC address of your Arch box. There is sometimes a mechanism by which cable modems only want to work on one machine, according to their TOS. If that is the case, IIRC a cable modem reboot should do it..

Thanks. I have been powercycling my modem, but even before it worked without a powercycle, so I know it's not the MAC address. I will do as you instructed and post back, though I just changed residences this past week so I am going to need to get a new subscription, etc. and it will be a while before I post back!

Anyone notice that the problem is after moving up to x86_64? Is this true?

I have just installed x86_64 and my realtek 8169 (r8169 module) is set up OK (in fact, it is almost certainly correct, as I am no noob) but all packets are dropped. It works fine during the install, which I presume uses x86 (not _64).

I have a link light at 100MB and the traffic light flashes. I have tried the windows WOL solution - doesn't help. Also tried the TCP window size fix - doesn't help.

Any ideas?

** SOLVED **

Go into windows and set speed 100MHz Full Duplex and restarted.
mii-tool reports

eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok

and eth0 comes alive!
