Hello people. I've been a linux user for about 4 or 5 years now and I've tried many many distros during this time; from the easiest ones (SuSE, Ubuntu), to intermediate (Debian) and more advanced ones (Gentoo, for example). For some reason I've preferred Debian and Debian-based distros during the last few years, so the couple of distros that have had a steady place in my HDD are Ubuntu (basically because it's the one I install to my friends and family, so I must be familiar with it) and Debian Testing (mainly for my own use and for personal preference). As for other distros I've tried, even though I've liked them, they haven't lasted for too long in my HDD. Well, lately I read some -positive- mentions to Archlinux on another forum, so I decided to give it a try, like 4 days ago. As usual, before installing I read some documentation, and after I had my wireless connection set up and the whole system up and running I haven't used anything else but Arch (not that I'm trashing Debian, but I'm still discovering Arch). What can I say, Arch is simple yet functional and very powerful (and from my experience it's rock solid, in spite of having nearly the latest software available). These have been 4 days of learning, discovering and fun (I'm even learning how to make Arch packages, and it's really fun
). Arch will definitely stay in my HDD.
Sorry if the above comment sounds very personal; just wanted to share my Arch experience with you, folks (your views and comments are welcome) ![]()
Greetings.

Exactly the same.

Same here. I've been using it for 4 days, and it is already more functional than the 2 weeks I spent on Gentoo. It is actually one of the easiest (including SuSE and Ubuntu) distros I've ever used. It isn't GUI based, like those, but it is actually very easy. Rc.conf is great...very nicely set up. My brother who also uses Arch said it's like Slackware, only newer, and with a really, really good package manager. Personally, Gentoo is just a little too much upkeep for me. Basically, Arch Just Works (TM)
I can't really see myself using anything else.
I think I'll install it on my iBook G4 once archlinuxppc.org starts working again, and I'll see how easy it is to get wireless together. I imagine it will be as smooth as my desktop install, though, which is excellent.
Stop looking at my signature. It betrays your nature.

Ditto and please try FaunOS for a "LIVE" flash drive experience with archlinux based OS.

If you know your way round linux, Arch is easier to install than Ubuntu. It always tells you whats going on and doesn't guess what you want.

Hi people, thanks for your comments.
Yes, Arch definitely works great and it's not as hard as some people might think given the fact that doesn't install a GUI by default (it's in fact pretty easy as you people have pointed out). Some of the things I most like about Arch is that doesn't force you to use a specific graphic environment and a specific setup by default; if you want Gnome, you install it and you're done, the same goes for KDE or any other DE/WM. In other words, it's highly flexible, versatile and customizable.
As for FaunOS, I'll surely give it a try (too bad the machines at my workplace have low specs, so I'm not sure if it'll run smoothly there).

Welcome to Arch!
- I tried many distro's as well and decided to stay with Arch since it's so well put together.
I think the whole beauty of Arch lays in it's ability to be as 'simple' or as 'challenging' as the user wishes it to be. So if you want it standard all one needs to do is install a few small packages, edit a few lines in rc.conf and off they go - but if you wish to 'tweak out' your version of Arch it's also ready to be bended in whatever way you see fit
Hope you stay a while, I know that I will!

Yes, you're right. I noticed it after I opened this one. Maybe a moderator can merge this one at the end of "The Official Unofficial 'Arch is Best'" thread? (sorry for the fuss) ![]()

There cannot be too many. ![]()
These threads are a testament to the devs and community. Let them be.

I agree. There's always room for more praise for those who deserve it. The devs and community are great. Arch is an elegant, flexible, powerful, and well-supported distro. The AUR and the wiki really fill it all out nicely. Kudos to those who make it all happen.

Just like other newcomers here I tried a lot of different distro's the past 1.5 year of working with linux. I tried ubuntu, kubuntu, pclinuxos and some others. But I never got the feeling I learned how the work with linux, it felt I kept using the "windows way" and depended on the gui.
Now with Archlinux I really enjoy playing around with things and I am learning the inner workings better then all my previous distro's combined.
Cheers to the developers and community of Archlinux.
Existence is futile.

I think I've finished my distro hop and I'm stuck to Arch. I haven't tried Debian yet but I don't see it tempting me away from Arch. I stick to trying out distros from within my stable KDEmod setup using VirtualBox.
