I've got an old P3 500mhz laptop..I'd like to connect to my desktop and stream music off of it. Currently I'm mounting an NFS share and using xmms.. Is this the best option or is there a lightweight daap client that I could use? Rhythmbox and amarok are out of the question on this machine..

You could install xmms2 with PulseAudio output on your laptop. Since PulseAudio can be setup to stream audio over a network and xmms2 can be operated over the network as well, you could just install your favorite xmms2 client on your desktop pc to control xmms2d on the laptop. Of course you need to install PulseAudio on the desktop as well.
I have not tried this myself, but have heard on #xmms2 (on Freenode) that this works fairly well.

I would install mpd on the laptop and use the client of your choice on the laptop or any pc in your house to control it. I have a similar setup using a similar spec desktop pc.

I will look into xmms2 for sure...
Is this possible with mpd?? I tried with sonata on my laptop. I could control mpd just fine on the desktop, but I want the audio to play through my laptop...I assumed mpd would do this, but when I hit up the mpd wiki it said mpd didnt stream audio..
