gnome 2.22 annoyances

Gnome 2.22 is for the most part better than Gnome 2.20 and I downloaded it from cimi's repository.  I believe it comes to the repositories sometime this week and I have a couple of complaints about it that I think should be fixed.

Multimedia keys
--they have stopped working with my programs.  They are still recognized and are easily set with the keyboard shortcut settings, but they simply won't work with banshee, rhythmbox, or anything else that they previously did work with.  In addition to this, the mechanism that is used to grab the keys is different....somehow....because I can't use keytouch to replace it.  It always complains that the keys are already grabbed by another program.

Panel
-- they can't be shrunk below 24 pixels...I always like to have mine at 22.  At 24, the tray icons look huge for some programs.  I know this seems like a small thing, but it is fairly annoying.  EDIT:  Ok actually, the panels DO go below 24 pixels, but ONLY on a panel without the menubar in it.  Since i have two panels that extend across the top of my dual screen computer, I have one with the menubar in it and one without the menubar.  The one without the menubar can be shrunk down to 22 pixels, however, I want them to be the same size, so this is still a problem.

Clock
-- the clock has some hard coded space before it in the button in the panel.  I don't know why this is, but maybe it has something to do with the extended functionality of the program, or maybe the developers thought users would want a little buffer before the clock applet in the panel...well at least, I don't like it.

And one more thing, perl applications that use the system tray refuse to work with the newest version of perl.  I know this isn't related to Gnome, but i just felt saddened that I couldn't use checkgmail anymore, or at least not until the next version.  If there are any hacks or anything that I can use to get around these problems in the meantime I would be very thankful if you shared them with me.  I hope at least some of these things are changed by default.

I am hoping epiphany-extensions will be updated to work with epiphany 2.22.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

It looks like all gnome issues should go to the gnome bug tracker, maybe after being confirmed by other users if you believe you might be missing something. But if these are real issues, I don't see what Arch users will do about it.

About checkgmail problem, it's not the correct place either. After the perl update, some app might need to be rebuilt. You report these issues to the arch bug tracker when it's not already done. In this case it is:

pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Panel If you use unsupported software then you should not complain about it, go and submit your bugreports to menubar *hack*

Clock Right click, preferences, disable weather and temperature. Same behaviour as before without spaces

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

i don't use cimi's packages but had compiled my own before and the multimedia keys of my thinkpad (fn+arrows) work fine in rhythmbox and totem.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

Hmmm...i guess it's possible that it was a problem with Cimi's compilation, but I was under the impression that he modified it from the x64 version that was already available in the testing repo, so it should have been fine already.  and you also said that your multimedia keys were fn+arrows while mine are actual buttons on my keyboard.  However, I believe that it probably doesn't work with that way either, I'll check once I get back home.  Once Gnome 2.22 comes out in the i686 repo, do you think that it will be easy to replace it with the offical version?  Or maybe to compile it myself? (although I wouldn't want to do this...)

Well if this is the case, then I'll bet the official release for i686 will work with Multimedia keys as well.  However, I do have a 64 bit processor, so I am 64 bit capable, but I would rather not use 64 bit becuase of the problems that it has and the fact that I've never really seen any speed increases that were worth it.

Please, never ever complain for builds that are not official. PERIOD.

Sorry, I'll try not to.  It's just that I usually like to only have the default repositories in my pacman.conf, but I was curious about Gnome 2.22 and it wasn't available in those yet.

Thanks to Cimi, my clock is fixed and thanks to Shining, my checkgmail is fixed.  If anyone has any information on fixing the other things please let me know, or, as some have said, it will probably be fixed once the latest gnome reaches [extra] anyway.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

I am using i686 Packages from Cimi and the Fn+Arrow Keys for Screen Brightness and Volume Control on my Acer TravelMate work without a problem. I also don't have spaces before the clock applet. It's just the weather applet integrated with the clock, but no unsusual or ugly spacing.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

gnome 2.22 hit i686 testing.

I'm closing the repo, which I published not to override official builds but to provide one week before the 2.22 release for the interested guys.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

Multimedia keys work fine again here, solution is simple: reinstall gnome-settings-daemon.

The reason for this breakage is plain simple:
2.20: gnome-control-center includes gnome-settings-daemon
2.22: gnome-control-center depends on standalone gnome-settings-daemon

When upgrading:
gnome-settings-daemon installs schemas and uninstalls old schemas if present
gnome-control-center removes old schemas before upgrade, which contains parts of the old gnome-settings-daemon schemas

For now, the workaround is to reinstall gnome-settings-daemon after upgrading to gnome-control-center 2.22.0

I will add a check to the gnome-control-center postinstall script to find out which version it upgraded from. If it's an older release than the current one, it will re-install the schemas of the gnome-settings-daemon package.

OO nice call.  Ill be sure to do this.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

I did what you said JGC, and the multimedia keys work for some programs, like totem, but not for any others like banshee or sonata.  I don't know where the problem lies in this case, perhaps inside the program that uses the keys perhaps?  In that case it's a matter of time.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

How do you install gnome 2.22? I've tried

sudo pacman -S testing/gnome testing/gome-extra

but it does not work.

Edit your pacman.conf to enable the testing repository, sync, and just install Gnome.

I know, dude. But, I only want to install gnome, not everything from testing.
That's why I moved it to the bottom of my conf.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

so install just gnome, simply enable testing and type "sudo pacman -Sy"
This'll update pacman but not install anything.  Then type "sudo pacman -S gnome gnome-extra"
It'll only install the packages needed by gnome and nothing else.  Then remove testing repository and you should be fine.  If you update again after that, it'll say your version is newer than the version in extra but that's ok because it is.

You're going to need a bunch of stuff from testing to do this. And some stuff in testing, like libtool, is going to break some things in a big way. E17 will not run after the upgrade (in fact, your system will not even work). It needs to be rebuilt.

Go into Appearance Preferences and make your Application Font smaller, it will allow you to make your panel smaller.

Re: gnome 2.22 annoyances

Hi,

I've upgraded to gnome-2.22 from testing. I have a few errors (except these errors, everything works, so kudos to who built the packages):
** (gnome-panel:6498): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1268: failed to load applet OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet:
System exception: IDL:Bonobo/GeneralError:1.0 : Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred

** (gnome-panel:6498): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1268: failed to load applet OAFIID:GNOME_GWeatherApplet:
System exception: IDL:Bonobo/GeneralError:1.0 : Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred

** (nm-applet:6514): WARNING **: <WARN>  nma_dbus_init(): could not acquire its service.  dbus_bus_acquire_service() says: 'Connection ":1.38" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo" due to security policies in the configuration file'

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Adrian.
