Re: 2008.03-0.3 Isos released, installation feedback

Installed the 2008.03-0.1 i686 iso, everything seems to be fine till now...
I got a pacman warning though, while installing the base(+some support and lib) packages saying something like:

dependency cycle detected:
installing bash before glibc
dependency cycle detected:
installing readline before glibc...
same for ncurses...
and same message for db before coreutils...

But again, except I got one kernel panic (hehe) installing kde... don't know what was that exactly to be honest... but anyway I rebooted and forced the install and I'm typing from the freshly installed system now, so no major installer problems!

Thanks for getting the atl2 in by default, it sure is frustrating to try to update network modules when network is lost with kernel updates

Great job! I was not able to install with the official ftp 2 days ago, but yesterday I tried your brand new x86_64 ftp iso and everything worked.
I became an archer with your iso smile
I have always used easy distros until now and I think it's time to learn something more about Linux.

Re: 2008.03-0.3 Isos released, installation feedback

I have no atl2 card, but I am reading the arch-dev open mailing list.
I have to say, I am amazed at the tone there, even though I might not have the full picture. In any case, I think that kernel patches are fine if they help people. And about ISO quality: you use it to install stuff once, it works, I am happy (!) and don't give a F&%$ if they are technically imperfect. This would be a different issue if my system was running that way.
Don't mean to say archiso is obsolete: I will try it our very soon, and appreciate its existence. But again: and I have been following this for some time now, please don't start locking out users because you think that this doesn't 'fit' your coding philosophy. I seriously doubt that the atl2 driver patch will significantly complicate the kernel.

Cheers,
Blind

Re: 2008.03-0.3 Isos released, installation feedback

Yeah, I must say that yesterday's activities on the dev mailing list (and the build up towards it, since the initscripts thread) are about the most disappointing things about Arch linux thus far (in my experience with the distro).  And this is the first time, I think, that I've said anything critical about Arch at all.

I know that tpowa has worked hard on the new iso, helping to fix bug reports that were holding things up along the way, so I think he should be thanked for it, not subjected to a total critique because of some, basically, insignificant detail.

One small bug:

When choosing 2: Partition hard drives, there is a small typo on the introduction screen.
-.."You should make a swap partition and as many data partition as you will need."
+ "You should make a swap partition and as many data partitions as you will need."

Other than that, working superbly, thanks.

Yup. I wish that the project lead would be more poised and considerate in answering to criticism.
That is vital for the success of a project.

i686 worked like a charm for me on my old lappy. Only issue is I'm having some strange speed problems with my wlan, but thats not related to the isos. Great work!

Yeah, I thought the overall *not-flaming* tone in Archlinux was one of it's strongest points mad
It seems like there are quite a few irritations, why? Archlinux is doing great! It should be fun to help it develop and teamwork is important here!

Re: 2008.03-0.3 Isos released, installation feedback

Hi

I have tried the 86_64x iso and I had no problems except, that the command locale -a did not work during the installation, there were no zoneinfos and I think on the installed system I have an empty /etc/locale.gen file, meanwhile the settings of the installation (de_CH) are working.
But otherwise: thank you for the good work!

I don't want to change the topic either, but i read in the dev-arch mailing list that tpowa leaves arch for some time for personal reasons. I want to now what will happen with these iso images...it's going to be (fully) released some time?

PD: i'm not a native english speaker (or writer) tongue

I'm not a developer, but I can safely tell you that there will be a fully released ISO. tpowa seems to be the main person behind the iso's, but I imagine he's not going to be ditching it before leaving (although i'm sure noone would hold it against him considering how much he's done for arch). Even if he does, its not like nobody else in the dev team is capable of creating an ISO.

Anyways, back on topic. Just installed arch on another partition and all is in working order (64bit). I don't exactly have ridiculously rare hardware though. Thanks! cool

Just installed fresh using the ftp ISO and it worked like a charm.  I had several issues installing using the last ISO but this one seems smooth as silk.  Great work!

Used 2008.03-0.2 i686 core ISO.

Configuring using encryption and I got some msg...

/sbin/udevsettle: no such file or directory

But installation went fine, no problems other than above.

Re: 2008.03-0.3 Isos released, installation feedback

Tpowa, I downloaded and booted the iso two days ago to fix a grub issue. It was only the 0.1 cd because the mirror I used didn't have the 0.2 cd.
I used it as a resuce cd.
I didn't try the install but I was able to use the kernel on the core cd to boot my actual system. I was also able to use it to fix grub.

The cd is working great. but I get a /sbin/udevsettle: no such file or directory error.
It happened at boot.

I have /home and root drive encrypted. Swap isn't encrypted of course.
