HELP, can't login into Arch anymore

I'm running Arch Linux 32-bit on my machine with KDEmod as my desktop. I just did an update of my Arch Linux installation just now (ran pacman -Syu) and then I restarted my machine again because of new udev påackage. Now I can't login anymore the login screen doesn't come up anymore I just see a busy mouse pointer which I can move but the rest of the login screen does not appear. I tried then to into console by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 but that hangs straight after I type my username and password and hit return. Even logging in as root hangs there. What's wrong and how do I fix it? PLEASE HELP!

Kind Regards

André

Re: HELP, can't login into Arch anymore

Maybe try killing X first, then logging in? Ctrl+Alt+Backspace while the busy cursor is up...hopefully you will be able to login then. Others probably have better suggestions.

Re: HELP, can't login into Arch anymore

If that doesn't work, try booting runlevel 1 (single-user console) rather than 5 (x-org) by hitting c at the grub screen (assuming you use grub) then typing the boot commands manually:

root (hd0,0)
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 1

Replace '(hd0,0)', '/dev/sda1' and the paths as suitable for your installation. (and note the single '1' parameter at the end - this is the start-up runlevel)

This should at least let you get into the system to check logs etc.

Alternatively, if you're not keen on that method, boot from the Arch CD or another Linux live-cd and access the logs/config files from there, perhaps removing your graphically log-in daemon from rc.conf? (assuming thats the way you're triggering graphical login)

Hope this helps...
