Re: Nethackers?

I admit I am one of the few who's never finished reading The Lord of the Rings, nor watched the movie (I wanted to finish the book first). So I don't like the idea of playing a game with such a setting. If I will ever come to the end of the book it would just spoil it for me.

So, no Angbad for me until I finish The Lord of the Rings tongue

I am one of the few who's never started reading The Lord of the Rings and slept on the first 30 minutes of the first movie.

Re: Nethackers?

I know this thread has been dead for a while but I thout I would say... damn y'all.  I started playing Nethack when I saw the thread, just to check it out, but now I'm pissing away huge chunks of my day playing it and other Roguelikes.  Great fun!

Re: Nethackers?

Yeah! Nethack is damn good. I also got very interested in roguelike games when I discovered it. Even though I usually tend to stick with one until I finish it, so it's gonna be Nethack for the next few years I guess tongue

Re: Nethackers?

I started playing Nethack almost the same way finferflu did just a few days ago, I tried it a year or so ago and got confused by all the controls and forgot about it, few days ago thought i should try again, read the guide and started playing.
Very addictive stuff.

Re: Nethackers?

Wow, you must be a very good player... or I must be an immensely crappy one tongue
It took me months and months to score something close to your points. Actually I started to score some reasonable points only since a week or so...
Well, I can only say that I've never played any serious RPG before Nethack (I'm not sure I can count Final Fantasy as an RPG, as it's more a CRPG, and to be honest I also find it quite boring, I tend to get asleep during the dialogues, so I have always avoided those genres... perhaps Runescape comes closer to a RPG).

Re: Nethackers?

You just need to use the barbarian to get far like i said tongue Great weapons from start and can eat anything almost. Quite easy tongue

(Btw best RPG's of alltime are torment, fallout, baldur's gate and kotor. But you need to appreciate the story with those)

Re: Nethackers?

I thought the Valkyrie was alright, at least that's what manuals told me.

Anyway, when I'm playing videogames I detest appreciating the story if it's too obtrusive. I just wanna play (FFS) big_smile

Re: Nethackers?

Barbarian is good for a start, but later in the game it's not so convenient. Valkyrie is beginner's best (in my experience).

New highscore, goddamn floating eye paralyzed me sad
Im fairly new, playing intensively 4th day maybe, but im experienced with many RPGs.
Mainly you just have to be careful in Nethack, and paranoid about everything, if theres lots of enemies take it to a small corridor where you can defeat them one by one, throw daggers and weaken enemies before they get in close combat with you, keep in mind the closest exits, stairs, etc.
Teleportation scrolls are great too, if youre very low on HP, pray, or engrave Elbereth on floor.

Re: Nethackers?

I discovered Nethack about 5 years ago when I came upon a thread, much like this one, describing it as being one of the greatest games ever made.  Much like the OP, after starting it up for the first time, I didn't open it again for some time.

About 2 years ago, I gave it another whirl.  This time, I became madly addicted.  Nethack really is one of the most feature-filled and innovative games ever created.  It's depth is incredible, and the community around it is fantastic.  I play nethack whenever I can... it's nice to be able to play something solely in a terminal at work wink

Does anyone else play on nethack.alt.org?  It's an open server where you can play and watch other people play.  I play there as 'lljkw00t'.

Also, #nethack on freenode is a lot of fun and very helpful.

Re: Nethackers?

Yeah, I sometimes play on that server, even though there's not much to see tongue
I've been in the #nethack channel once, and I've already told them that it's the second excellent channel I have found on freenode after #archlinux big_smile There are very cool and helpful people there, and to be honest I didn't expect that, I was expecting a channel full of trolls and elitists. Fortunately I was wrong.

You know you can create a nethackrc file for NAO, right?  At the main menu, select modify configuration, and add the option:

OPTIONS:DECgraphics

Should make everything nice and pretty smile

Also, if you are a urxvt user, you will want to fake a shell type when you login to NAO.  Using

export SHELL=xterm-color

should do the trick big_smile

Re: Nethackers?

Yeah, yeah. I meant there's no much to see in the sense of spectating or looking at my score. The #nethack channel has already helped me out with terminal problems smile

You don't miss anything by not having read/seen LoTR.  It's not dependent on it. Just get to the bottom and kill the bad guy while getting some phat loot on the way smile .... easier said than done.

Interhack is a nifty program that sits inbetween you and Nethack.

I tried to make a PKGBUILD for this program before, but the perl dependencies were too much for me. I ended up installing them via cpan.

If anyone is interested, I've made a bunch of PKGBUILDs for perl dependencies (I try not to install via cpan), together with a dummy PKGBUILD for interhack. I couldn't sensibly package interhack, since it's designed to run from the darcs directory:

darcs get http://interhack.us/trunk interhack
cd interhack
perl interhack.pl

Re: Nethackers?

I can't believe I've missed that thread! Ah well... I'm something of a NetHack Veteran, playing the game regularly from 1998 on. I've ascended around 11 times or more, the only class being left is healers (I fucking hate them!).
At the moment I am playing more doomrl, though. It is quick to get into and heaps of fun. So everyone who is into roguelikes should try it out.

About interhack: I think it's cheating. wink

Re: Nethackers?

hello friends,
I started to play as a Wizard once more. Got to level 3, there was a general store there, so I went inside.
One of the items turned into a "small mimic", a hostile creature, so I started to fight it. Fearing it would kill me, I fired a Force Bolt. It killed him, but the bolt also broke two potions and the shopkeeper told me now I owe him 500 gold for this broken stuff -  but I don't have enough money... I started to sell my stuff, but don't have much of it either... none of the scrolls I have is a teleport. Wish me luck, I will think of something...

Re: Nethackers?

Read the scrolls in the shop, or try the rings (risking for cursed ones)... try to use all the stuff you find in the shop...
Even though, it's usually the end at this point tongue
