I changed the taskbar from normal size to small and now it thinks that there's 16 virtual desktops

In the settings, I have chosen to have four virtual desktops:

It's very confusing, any help is appreciated.

do you run compiz?

Yeah, I just installed compiz fusion.

Compiz is goofy with KDE. Compiz gives you four viewports for each KDE virtual desktop. Decrease the KDE virtual desktops to one.

Ah, alright, that did the trick, thanks for the help guys .

reducing the number of desktops does work somewhat. However this means that when i switch to desktop 2 to open more windows, my taskbar still has all the windows from desktop 1 listed there.
So, does anyone know if there is a setting in compiz somewhere that actually fixes this problem (tells it to only have 1 viewport per desktop) as oppossed to hiding just it?

you have to switch the taskbar applet on kicker to the "taskbar - compiz" one
there are other things with the "-compiz" among the applets aswell

ahh, no i haven't. How would one go about doing that? I've tried looking through the wiki and the forums, but can't seem to find the right thing. A point in the right direction is all i need (...i hope...)

you rightclick the task bar then goto
Remove from panel -> applet
and click taskbar this remove the taskbar from kicker !this means that none of your programs will be shown where gonna fix this soon so hang on!
then righclick on the bar again and click
Add applet to panel
this will open a window will things you can add to your bar type compiz into the search field and a "taskbar - compiz" should be all that is there double click on its icon and it should ad itself to the bar it should use the settings specified from the old taskbar and hide windows when you are no longer on the same desktop
edit: i hope this is what you wanted and that it helped

Thankyou for that INCSlayer that's pecked my head for months, wonder when that applet turned up.

well it has been around for quite some time but you used to have to manually install it i have no idea when it started getting supplied with the compiz-fusion package
EDIT: its actually supplied by kdemod since my desktop has it and my laptop dont and the difference is that my desktop uses kdemod and my lappy uses kde or parts of it anyway

just as a side note, to be able to use the taskbar - compiz applet in kdemod, you need to install kdemod-applets
ie: pacman -S kdemod-applets
i don't think this gets install if you just do the normal install of kdemod (ie, if you have never done: pacman -S kdemod-complete)
