Recording streaming audio / M-Audio Rev. 5.1

Is it true that the ability to record streaming audio ("stereo mix", "What U Hear") is in the driver and not in the soundcard hardware.  Does having a hardware mixer change this answer?

Has anybody been able to record streaming audio with the M-Audio Revolution 5.1.  I assume any solution involves the .asoundrc file, but any pointers would be appreciated.

FWIW:  My inelegant solution was to attach a Y-cable splitter to the headphone jack on my speakers with one cable going to the  line-in on the soundcard and the other cable  going to an FM transmitter which I was  use often anyway.  This allows me to record and listen at the same time.  This is a good "solution" for talk and drama, but I can't vouch for the music quality.

Any links to a good linux sound primer would also be appreciated.  The ones I've seen are either too "simple" or too technical.

Thanks

Larry
