Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me here. I've been following the Newbies wiki and googling for the last few hours trying to get xorg.conf configured properly and so far I seem to be having the worst luck.

I've gotten a server error stating there is no screen specified, a display error saying that "default"is not a valid entry in that section and who knows what else. Basically, its just error after error. When I attempt to test the configuration I either get a black screen or more errors.

I'm using an ATI card on an HP Zv5120. Specifically, I installed the ATI proprietary card listed in the Wiki. I've followed the Wiki steps over and over again installing xorg, and mesa and the catalyst driver.

The lspci | grep vga command brings this up:  VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS300M AGP [Radeon Mobility 9100IGP]

I've tried to use the aticonfig tool, the "hwd -s" command, "Xorg -configure" and anything that appears in the Wiki.

startx or trying to test xorg.conf in the first place seems to bring me nothing but trouble as I've said before. The "~/.xinitrc" test gives me some more touble in that the output claims it does not exist. It appears to be right because "nano ~/.xinitrc" does nothing even when the "cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc ~/" command has been executed before it. Listed below are any files that I think you might find helpful should you choose to tackle this with me. I should say though that I have tinkered with a few settings trying to get it to work, only what it tells me to do in the Wiki, but just the same tinkering. In particular, I've added the "monitor" "screen" and "extension" details from the Beginners Wiki. I'd really appreciate anything you can do for me here.

In addition I have xorg.conf.vesa in my X11 file, but I didn't think that was as important so I left it out to try and unclutter this post.  If you need it please let me know.

If it helps I think the default resolution is 1024 x 768. I'm also using the regular synaptics touch pad.

I'm sorry about the length and lack of my understanding. I've been doing some reading but I'm still extremely far from proficiency. On the bright side I got my networking done smile

Appreciate any help you can provide for me. I really, really do as I'd hate to just scrap this install and chalk it up to something I can't do yet.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Can you paste all the errors that startx gives you? (if you cant copy from console you can get the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log)

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

There was some command I did that automatically generates an xorg.conf file but without indept knowledge of your video driver it is hard to set up. I saw the command somewhere else I forgot what it was.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

I have no experience with ATI drivers, this is a majot issue with your config or driver:
(EE) No devices detected.

I would try a different ATI driver to see maybe that works
You can also try "hwd -x" so see what that does.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Ok,
I had the same probs when I irst installed Arch and I have an nvidia card.
Here's how i fixed it:

By your words, you have an ati driver installed, hopefully it's the proper one.

As root:
Type: Xorg -configure         enter
Type: mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf       enter

Test the server by typing: X -config /root/xorg.conf        enter

See the server by typing: nano /root/xorg.conf

Hope that helps.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Fglrx (the binary, closed source ATI driver) is an absolute pig to set up.  If I were you I'd start with just vesa, the generic video driver. Once you have a working xorg.conf, then think about modifying it to work with the open source ati driver or fglrx.  For now, change

Driver "fglrx"

to

Driver "vesa"

and see if that works.

Vesa provides simple, 2D graphics
ati/radeon provides better features, including composite and 3D
fglrx provides the best speeds and features, but is very temperamental.  My ATI Radeon is completely unsupported with it.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

I'd be inclined to agree with Jack B.
I have a lappy with an ati card and gave up on finding anything for it linux-wise with 3d.
The nvidia cards aren't that horrendous in price.
My 6300 cards for my towers I got for something like 40.00 US and upgraded them for 80.00 US each via ebay.
I still have the 6300 cards for back up as they function fine.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Hey guys, thanks for the assistance here but its still a no go. I keep on getting errors like "no screens found" and failed to load modules "glx" and "radeon" (the last two after uninstalling the proprietary drivers and installing the open source driver and following the directions for that"

Does anyone have any other ideas that might help? I'm willing to post whatever might be needed but I am getting nowhere with xorg and very frustrated in the process. After 7+ hours working on this alone I have read and re read the wiki and other posts and feel no closer to accomplishing this than when I first started.

Unfortunately it looks as if I'm just not quite up to where I need to be to get arch working, maybe I should just accept my accomplishment configuring the internet and move on.. I hope not though

Dave, it takes me 8 hours to get Arch installed with my bandwidth.
Sometimes 10 if I screw up and overlook something.
Rather than just give up, try starting over keeping in mind the way the beginners guide is written, you have to read ahead some to make sure you're doing the right things for your box.[No criticism intended towards the guide as the guide is intended to try and cover most instances and hardware and that isn't an easy job]
I found that out the hard way on my very first install and had to start all over as I was hopelessly confused.
You may also consider setting up your partition table ahead of time like I do as that helps alleviate problems and confusion as well as gives you a clean spot to mount.
Prior distro's can "bleed through" and hose the system you're trying to install.
That very thing has happened to me a few times.
Trust me man, if you're impressed by the other distro i know you use, you'll adore this one.
Based on what you're telling us, it sounds to me like something was overlooked or mis-typed at some point as obviously others were succesful, and I'm not trying to imply you're a dummass either.
Files not found mean just that, they aren't there, hence, they weren't told to be made or placed where they're supposed to be.
That has happened to everyone in this forum at some point in time.
So, rather than throw in the towel and admit defeat, just try it again.
It's only time you're spending, plus, you're still learning something about Linx and your hardware in the process.

Edit: Btw, this is probably the driver you need...

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

The xinitrc file you have posted is  /etc/X11/ xinit/xinitrc. It is not your ~/.xinitrc. You indicated that ~/.xinitrc does not exist, even after copying it from /etc/skel. If this is the case, and is actually missing, (excluding the possibility that you improperly copied it from /etc/skel/) then the installation media is most likely corrupt.
Missing file weirdness and unexpected behavior can usually be solved by re-burning an ISO with better media/slower speeds. I would try that, before going any further.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Ok smile I think I have some measure of success. I uninstalled all my old drivers, and xorg, and vesa, and put it all back in. I tried hwd -s auto to auto configure xorg. Didn't work. Then I did Xorg -configure and tested it with the X -config /root/xorg.conf.new command and I see the hollow vector x in the center which means I did it right, right? so SUCCESS

What do I do now though? Do I have somehow make xorg.conf.new into regular old xorg.conf? In the beginners wiki it says to do that but only after modifying it. Should I modify it? It says to do this

Section "Device"

       ...

       Driver  "savage"

       ...

EndSection

Ensure there are horizontal sync and vertical refresh specs under section "Monitor". If not, add them:
Section "Monitor"
       Identifier   "Monitor0"
       VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
       ModelName    "Monitor Model"
       HorizSync     30.0 - 130.0 # Safe for LCD's
       VertRefresh   50.0 - 100.0 # Safe for LCD's and most CRT's.
EndSection

(If you do not know these specs, consult your monitor's documentation.)

Specify your default color depth under section "Screen":
Section "Screen"
       Identifier "Screen0"
       Device     "Card0"
       Monitor    "Monitor0"
       DefaultDepth 24

(Typically, this will be set to 24 for true color.)

Also add your desired Modes to your "Display" subsection, at least under the Depth 24 header, e.g.:
SubSection "Display"
               Viewport   0 0
               Depth     24
               Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Add the following section, if you wish to enable eye candy which requires the composite extension:
Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

And then I see the command to change xorg.conf.new to xorg.conf

Sorry if I'm frantic I just don't want to screw this up as I think I've achieved moderate success.

Re: Help configuring xorg.conf so I can get to an X windows environment

Hi again, I seem to have gotten a working xorg.conf and was able to successfully enter the above text into it, surprise to me, it still works smile

Also, the .xinitrx file was able to be moved to where it needs to be without a problem. Now to pick a DE and see if that works, it should though if the terminal is right (no errors).

I'll update in a few hours then.
