Just boot from a CD, and run a filesystem check, e.g.:

e2fsck -p /dev/sda1

Do not mount the partition first!

fsck.jfs -p /dev/sda1

or you can just use 'fsck' and let it determine what filesystem you have

For reiser, amazingly, it's fsck.reiserfs (tab completion anyone?)

Guess I am too late to recommend you keep your fsck options in fstab.
