As big drawback of being a guru I do not like using email much.
I think forums are more sorted, easily browseable and such...
Unfortunately few people (almost none actually) of important project (kernel, gcc, ...) agree with this idea so I need to overtake this dislike for email and email clients.
So, what is your email client of choice?
Here a little list of what I'd like:
- easy to configure (I do not want spend days for connecting to a smtp server)
- capable of doing some autosorting (from address, subject, ...)
- easy to backup the emails somewhat
- keyboard usable, I do not hate mouses. But I hate when a program force me to use the mouse for something trivial.
Well. you see.... I thank everyone for pieces of advice.

With the latest security issues Thunderbird has had, I prefer using Opera's built-in email client. Works fine.

Mutt works perfect for me. I have it set up for gmail/IMAP.
Fast and efficient !!

I used to use Thunderbird, then Opera mail client but it does not support advanced filtering and GPG. Then I used Evolution but it's a memory eater and I won't say anything about its data storage method (sic). Now I use Claws and I think I found the perfect mail client
light, fast, 3 filter levels (you can even use regex), with some plugins (spamassassin, bogofilter, rss reader, ...), ...

Alpine is the best simple and lightweight email client I have found.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Agreed. I was pretty sure it was an opt in thing and not automatic...
Edit: Also, I use thunderbird...

Didn't found anything better than mutt.

+mutt. Or show me *-hooks elsewhere.

Claws.
Actually the fdm+mutt combo is quite nice, but I'm somewhat spoiled - I need a GUI.

Claws Mail here too.
Wife prefers thunderbird (allegedly for ease-of-use, but that's not a hard point compared to claws), but isnt demanding much. For thousands of mails a day, thunderbird was simply too slow for me. Compared to it, Claws is really fast.

did you use fdm+mutt with pop3 or imap?
i have been wanting to try imap with those two for a couple of months now but never really went with it. i currently use offlineimap instead of fdm
edit: ok you didnt say you used those two. maybe someone else has experience

I just use the gmail web interface for everything.
I also use gmail interface a lot.
checkgmail is also an awsome script to read your mails without having to open your browser.
However there are two things which I miss a lot :
1- The ability to send a mail with attachement inside the desktop (right click on a file or a photo and choose "send by email"). If somebody has a solution for gnome I would be very happy.
2- A synchronisation of my gmail contacts inside the desktop. conduit will certainly be the solution but it is still not 100% stable ...
Any other gmail + desktop integration experience ?
Mandrake (2001) -> Debian (2002) -> Nasgaia (2003) -> LFS (2004) -> FreeBSD (2004) -> Gentoo (2005) -> Kubuntu (2006) -> Archlinux (2007) -> ?
Will Archlinux finally be THE distro of my dreams ? Time will say, but its on the way ![]()

I have this in my .muttrc
set imap_user = 'mymail@gmail.com'
set imap_pass = ''
set spoolfile = imaps://imap.gmail.com:993/INBOX
set folder = imaps://imap.gmail.com:993
set record="imaps://imap.gmail.com/[Gmail]/Sent Mail"
set postponed="imaps://imap.gmail.com/[Gmail]/Drafts"]
set mail_check=90
set timeout=15And together with checkgmail I have a wonderful setup.
Mutt is extremely fast, very stable and beats all other maillapps in speed and usability.
I've tried them all and keeps returning to mutt ![]()
