hi
i just want to test gnome so i install it additionally to xfce4 which serve me until now
i closed x-server (alt + ctrl + ...)
and run gnome-session.
the out put it
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
xfce4 works fine.
when i edit the /.xinitrc file to exec gnome-session and startx gnome working fine.
what is the difference if run the command "gnome-session" from shell or fron the /.xinitrc file ??

the .xinitrc it is executed by the X window system after the X Server is started
if you run gnome-session from a console shell and there is no X server started, it cannot open the display...
the X server is normally started during "startx" or "xinit"

then why in shell when i start xfce (startxfce4) it do work?

Because startxfce4 check if there is an X server running. If not, it starts one.
gnome-session just tries to start a gnome session and expects an X server to already be running.
Difference in implementation is all...
