Hi,
I'm currently quitting gnome to go to Awesome but there are two features of gnome I'm still using or looking for a replacement solution. I'd like to quit using them so I wouldn't have to install gnome when (re)installing my Arch.
- I launch gnome-settings-daemon in my .xinitrc to have gtk apps looking good. Is there any way to have a gtk engine (not sure of the term here) running without gnome?
- I'd like to have an automount as under gnome. Any idea?
Thanks

For the automount, can't you just load hal as a daemon?

use gtk-chtheme, or just edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file.

I'm actually using Thunar, because it's much smaller. It can mount my devices, but you can use any tool you want.

hal is currently a daemon but if I boot and launch awesome my external HD isn't mounted. If I launch gnome then it's mounted.

I'll try that.

Nice idea, I'll try it too.

Sorry for the "shameless advertisement" but perhaps you could also try lxappearance (it's light but it can do a bit more than gtk-chtheme)? It's in aur:

I second Thunar but you could also try PCManFM - it's working well here.

You can also use autofs to mount your devices easily.

I have encountered some instability with thunar on NFS-shares here at the office, but pcmanfm looks promising (have not tested it thoroughly yet though).
Does anyone know how to make it the default FM in gnome?
Zl.
BTW, thx for making me look at LXDE, tami - will have a go at it on some older hardware...

I just saw this: http://lifehacker.com/software/linux-ti … 288616.php and it should work by the looks of it--I don't use gnome so I can't verify that it works but the methodology looks alright. I just switched from thunar to pcmanfm awhile ago and I really like it, especially the tab feature.
