Hi. I'm planning on buying an 8600GT and I want to know if anyone's managed to set it up and use it in Arch. Also, I don't have a great PC config: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 516 (2.93Ghz) and 1GB RAM. I don't have a special cooling system. So is my PC going to get fried or does the card have a decent cooling solution?

I'm using the laptop version and it works great.
What do you mean by get fried? I don't think any of your parts are going to get fried, as CPU and GPU should both have their own fans/heatsinks.
flack 2.0.6: menu-driven BASH script to easily tag FLAC files (AUR)
knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)

I don't have a special cooling system.
Install e.g. lm_sensors to see temperatures.
Might need to add a fan inside the case, to combat instability - but this is just speculation. Try it and see.

I'm using the 8600GT and it's working like a charm for me. No issues with anything really

Sorry about describing it as 'fried'. Its just that I'm not used to having a powerful graphics card. I've been using onboard graphics for years now. Glad to know the card works fine though.

Just for the record:
nVidia's driver already includes a utility (nvidia-settings) that show GPU temperatures, as well the current GPU and MEM clocks.

My GeForce 8600 GT is running steadily at arount 50-55 degrees C during load and around 46 in idle.
The passive heat sink has alot of air between its fins so IF yours would overheat a small fan will do wonders.
Great card really, cheap, passive and runs etqw just fine
