video syncing problems/artefacts

Hi,
Since like forever i had this problems. Very often when a popup window would appear or some app would start, in the place of the new window i would notice this artefacts:

200804052054281280x1024up0.th.png

I regularly do -Syu
so far i recall i think only one version of xorg-server update solved the issue (maybe i didn't test it properly).
Naturally i don't remember now what version that was smile
After another update i was experiencing this again.
Anyways the gfx is nvidia 7950GT, no OC or anything
gigabyte 81955 pro mb, p4@3.6GHz stock

Anyone has an idea what my problem could be?
Or has anyone experienced similar?
It's getting quite annoying after so much time without this being fixed.

Thanks in advanced.

edit: also didn't mention... those artefacts are visible for <1s when they happen
and i'm using nvidia drivers

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

I think I'm getting the same problem here, but it happens 50% of the time on the dropdown menus in applications for only a split second when the menu is shown, so I can't take a screenshot, sometimes I get a corrupted window similar to that you've posted when a window is drawn, but it's hard to trigger it (only see it on opera's startup menu every once in a while).

It's nothing big but just little annoyances, especially when I'm using black themes, since the menu is shown grey or white and corrupted half of the time when I scroll through menus, it certainly only happens with composite enabled, I don't remember having this problem before or maybe I just didn't notice it until it starts bugging me, since I don't use compiz or xcompmgr full time before, so I just notice it more recently after sticking with xcompmgr and sometimes xfce's compositor.

I can't narrow it down to whether it's the drivers, xorg, xorg.conf or the kernel, so I'm wondering if anyone else is having this same problem, I can't find anywhere with related info other than one post from ubuntu forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=367572

Which is quite old, from feb of 2007...

I'm using 7900GTX GO, and 173.08, the problem was there with 169.09 too.

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

Possible solution: add the 'backingstore' option under Device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
    ...
    Option "backingstore" "true"
EndSection

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

Sorry for the late reply, the backingstore option didn't fix it for me (I have it in xorg.conf though).

However, after re-reading this thread and OP's mention of xorg, I decided to install the xorg-server-gentoo package from AUR, and that seems to fix the problem for me smile . I haven't tried xorg from testing though, but I'm glad this little annoyance is finally gone (for now at least).

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

I had this problem too (with xfce) although now im using openbox with xcompmgr and havnt noticed a problem since.
And i never actually found a fix for it which bugged me.

Although i might try the gentoo xorg just to see if it fixes it on my old xfce setup.

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

I've had this happen ever since I switched to E17. It never lasts for more than a flash, so I wasn't concerned about it. This is a very fast machine though. I'd bet it would seem like more of a problem if it wasn't.

Re: video syncing problems/artefacts

Rather than start a new thread i thought id ask in this one.

I finally got around to installing the xorg-server-gentoo package (from aur) and it also fixed the problem for me with the glitches.

Does anyone know what patch it might be from the gentoo set that fixes this? i prefer the idea of just applying the patches i need rather than all of them.

Thanks
Kane
