normally when updating my pacnew files I edit the pacnew files and replace the original files but for /etc/group I've done (did? only once maybe?) it the other way because I'm a bit confused.
Can someone help explain to me...when a group has a non-empty password field, ie the "x" in
mpd:x:45:
how do I handle that. For example, suppose I wanted to edit group.pacnew to include the mpd group. Is it possible to do that by hand? would I actually type an "x"? Or is it some sort of encrypted thing or what's going on?
Thanks

That's a plain ASCII 'x' character yes, it means that the actual encrypted password is stored in /etc/shadow .
