[SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

hi

im running kde ontop of arch, with the proprietary nvidia drivers. i cant use kdm though for a gui login as i can never get back to terminal!!

the problem is that once x is started, everything is fine, but then wen i kill x, or try to switch to a terminal, my screen suspends or shuts off!

is there a way to stop this??

thanks

Try this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gru … n_settings

There's some reference to kdm at the bottom.  I don't use kdm so can't tell you for sure this will help but I just noticed it going through some other parts of the forum.

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

not quite, thanks anyway. basically, wen i kill x, insted of my pc going to cli, my screen suspends! if i then type 'startx' with the screen off, n hit enter, x fires back up and so does my screen!

any more ideas??

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

Do boot messages appear at boot? Because if not then it's a framebuffer issue.

However, you said you don't use KDM so I presume you _can_ boot to a text terminal, but once you startx, you can no longer access the text terminal. Is that right?

exactly!! i boot, and see all the messages scroll past, then get to cli and a login prompt, i login and startx. all goes fine. then im in kde, and if i do ctrl+alt+backspace or switch to another console, then my screen suspends! i can still type commands in the cli, but the screen is suspended, so cant see wot i type, for example, if i type startx then hit enter, x fires back up again and my screen comes back on!

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

Hmm, what graphics card are you using and what graphics driver? It might be related to conflicts between the graphics driver and the framebuffer driver.
It seems a really unusual problem.

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

I have a geforce 6200 as well, although I don't use kde, I found I had to go to nvidia-96xx awhile ago to make games work properly.  After a nvidia update I couldn't use the newest nvidia pkg.

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

wow, this problem is still bugging me!! i dont use kde anymore, i have started to play around with a number of wm's! unfortunately, everytime i break a config file like xorg.conf or xinitrc, and i try to restart x not realising the file is broken i get the blank screen! the only way i can fix it is to restart my pc, i get to cli then!! fix the issue then fire into x!! aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!!!!!

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

I've been having the same problem since the beginning of this month.

As soon as X is loaded, framebuffer terminals take about 2 or 3 minutes to come up after changing vt, if at all. I've tried without a login manager, without special framebuffer drivers (uvesafb or vga) and all vaguely new nVidia drivers (177.82, 160.** and 180.06). When booting to console, switching VTs works fine, but as soon as X is brought up, VTs practically die.

Tried 3 different kernels (with/without patches), 2 different versions of each. 3 different Xorg server versions.. I'm out of ideas!

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

So, did you guys tried without any framebuffer enabled?

It has to be specifically dissabled on the kernel command line if it's compiled in the kernel - but I don't use the Arch kernel so I don't exactly know what it's defaults are.

Re: [SOLVED] X server problem, i think?

@damjan
i tried to add vga=0, vga=normal & nofb to my kernel options in /boot/grub/menu.lst but it had no effect! i thought that would disable the framebuffer?

it didnt work anyway!
