[SOLVED] CUPS update and HP printer

Hi, this is my first "arch" post, I'm not a newbie but I need help with my Arch box.
The recent CUPS update (1.3.7) seems to have hidden my usb printer (Hp F380) from the printing server. Simply the communication between CUPS and my printer has broken down. The system "sees" my USB connection, load regularly kernel modules etc... but the printer doesn't receive anything. Deleting the printer in order to reinstall it I wasn't able to finish the install procedure anymore, because no USB printer was listed in "Add Printer" procedure.
Moreover CUPS didn't started correctly, the /etc/rc.d/cups start command returned BUSY... and because of that, I've downgraded to 1.3.6.
Now CUPS seems to start correctly, web interface works well, but any USB printer is shown. Selecting HP printer/ fax (hplip driver) and putting manually the printer's URI, the install procedure comes to the end, but the communication is still broken down: for instance the Test Page is correctly shown on Print Queue, but my printer doesn't work.

I'm quite sad, because I was surprised when I easily installed my printer the first time.

Any suggestion?
Thanks a lot in advance.

I have this issue, too. This could be related with bug FS#9935. Try to start /etc/start_udev manually before printing.

Re: [SOLVED] CUPS update and HP printer

The only way I can get my printer installed (HP) is to use hplip first set it up there, then making sure in my case that it's also set up in my KDE control center

Thanks a lot for your attention, unfortunately I haven't been able to find out a solution yet.:(
But I'll keep on trying.

Thanks again.

Re: [SOLVED] CUPS update and HP printer

Muahahaha! Ok, now it works!
How?
I don't know very well, honestly. My problem was that CUPS couldn't communicate with my USB printer, when indeed the system worked fine. In fact 'lsusb' gave me:

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 03f0:5511 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

that means that my printer was in /dev/bus/usb/001/002.
But a 'ls -l' returned me that the owner group was "camera" not "lp", and here was the problem: or better, I don't know why my last udev update (119-1) changed this behaviour, but it did.
So I downgraded Udev to the install cd's version, fixing the problem.
The command
#lpinfo -v
returned an USB printer (previously hidden) that I could select from Cups administration page (http://localhost:631).

Actually there is another little annoyance, due to some wrong setting in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf: sometimes Cups freezes, especially when I launch /etc/rc.d/cups start after starting my printer: I think it's a permission problem trying to write in /var/run/cups/certs/, I'll work out that.

That's all folks, best regards.
