Sound problems in KDEmod?

I have KDEmod 3.5.9 installed and it has been working pretty much flawlessly.  I recently noticed that the sound in pidgin wasn't working, which led me to try and figure out why.  Sound works fine in Amarok and all other media players and the console beep works.  I went into the Control Center to try and figure it out, and found that none of the KDE notification sounds work.  I'm using ALSA and my computer has the Realtek HD Audio system.  What would cause sound to work in certain programs but not others?

Thanks,
Nathan

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

in a terminal enter in "speaker-test" and check if there's an error output

"speaker-test" gives a command not found message...

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

then install alsa-utils, then run speaker-test

also, make sure that in kde contorl center->sound system you have it set to advanced linux sound architecture and not ARTS

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

Didn't get any errors and I set it to Alsa.  When i ran speaker-test it gave a string of outputs with times but no error messages.  I killed it after a couple of minutes, does it need to keep running to the end or will it show an error if there is one at the beginning?

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

nah, it'll output an error if there is one (e.g. device busy)

well, I don't know what the problem is then

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

Are you running arts? If so try disabling it and going alsa all the way.

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

Yes, I update the system weekly.  How would I disable arts?

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

err..isn't arts disabled by default? at least that's how it was for me.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

I seem to recall it being on by default. It's in the control center. Under the sound section. I'm not in KDE right now so that's the most I can give ya.

Re: Sound problems in KDEmod?

then just go ahead and disable it, system sounds can be played with "play" or something similar. i believe it is already set up that way in KDEmod.
