Im trying to install Arch on an old Acer laptop, but when i try the installer is works for a few seconds and then it stops with the message:
Kernel Panic - noy syncing: attempted to kill the idle task!
any idea how i can fix this?

Have you tried the ide-legacy string at boot?

ive just tried that and same error
a little more info:
[<c0401f1f0>] unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x260
is the last line in the list
ive also tried teh disk ina virtual machine and it worked fine

ive burnt off another disk from a different mirror, and that has the same problem, the kernel just panics every timei try to install

Give us more information. There will be lines above that which have important details
Chances are you didn't set grub/lilo up correctly. Double check there.

this is the install CD, i havent actually installed arch yet
there error occours when the installer is:
Early Unpacking initrafms

Confirmed here, only with latest installer iso.
2007.8 (2.6.22) works fine.
Toshiba satellite 4030cdt - celeron 300A (mendocino) 128MB RAM 4GB IDE HDD Trident 9525 SVGA
Will try to type out the trace if I find time.
Note this IS an i686 class chip.
