Afaik, locate has a database of file locations. If it isn't updated after a deletion, it will still show you thge db entry.

By default updatedb runs once a day. Somewhere around midnight on my pc.
If you want a real time list of files, use ls. Or for a real time search, try find.

There is also rlocate in [community] that uses a kernel module to keep itself up to date.

Wow! rlocate is cool! Who needs any desktop search now? Not that I ever used one, but it was quite annoying to updatedb every time I wanted to search for some file.

Why do you have to load a module to get rlocate working? Is there a locate with inotify support?
