Also, does the fingerprint reader work?

Edit: I've just ordered one of these so I look forward to contributing to the wiki!

Hi,

The fingerprint should work. I have not tested but it works well apparently under Ubuntu.

The battery lasts 2h - 2h30, this is not so good for a small laptop, but you have to remember that it is really powerfull !

Contribute whenever you want wink

Give a try to powertop (pacman -S powertop) and maybe you could extend its duration.

Nice price !!!

Feel free to complete the wiki when you setup arch !

Particularly, I'd like to have some returns about the no sound problem described in the wiki. Maybe it is solved now when you do a fresh install (I am too lazy to test it).

I don't want people to recompile alsa-drivers if it's useless, it can mess up their configuration !

I had to cancel mine... sad

Instead I ordered (off the Dell factory outlet) an XPS 1530, 3GB RAM, 1440x900 (no LED display sad), 320GB, 8600GT. I still think I'll be very pleased by it, whenever it arrives. smile

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

Woops! My mistake! It's a Dell XPS 1520! Well, better than anything. I got it yesterday, it's got a 2.4Ghz Penryn, 3GB of RAM, the 8600GT, 250GB HDD, DVD+RW, 1440x900 LCD, Dell wlan, no bluetooth though.

However I'm experiencing sound stuttering issues sad, using Vista. Others have reported the problem with Linux aswell. I have to get some CD-Rs to get Arch on there.

So far very pleased with the laptop, I only have to fix the sound issue...

Good for you, start a wiki page (there is one for 1530, I don't know if those two are very alike or not).

Dell wlan works well ? What are the modules/drivers to install ?

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

I can't install Arch on this laptop, when it tries to create a filesystem (no matter which), it spits out an error "number of inodes must be greater than 0". Also, cfdisk refuses to open the harddrive, I guess the partition scheme is foobar... fdisk opens it fine though.

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

It happened to me when I tried to use the initial partition scheme (I just resized the big Vista partition with GParted). It also happened on a Toshiba with Vista. I think this is related to the way Vista is pre-installed on thoses laptops.

What I did is that I destroyed all partitions (with GParted again) and then I created new ones with cfdisk which finally worked. Then you can install Vista again with the CD provided by Dell (don't forget to create a partition for it in cfdisk).
Install Vista first because it will systematically erase the MBR and GRUB won't start again. It is also recommended to put Vista on the first partition of your hard drive (sda1 in general), because Vista recovery tools sometimes can't see it otherwise (and those tools are useful ! Last week-end I had to launch a "repair startup" on my roomate's computer, aged 2 weeks !!!).

You can also get rid of Vista (what I did finally) and install XP in Virtualbox for rare emergencies !

Maybe I should put it in the wiki by the way...

Good luck ! big_smile

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

Yeah that is what I suspected. Problem is I've configured Vista to all my heart's contents now, installed all the apps, finetuned everything, you know... tongue

Is this possible:

1. Start up with Archlinux CD archlinux-i686-2008.03-0.3.core.iso.
2. Erase all partitions with fdisk (cfdisk won't even open the harddrive).
3. Create a Primary NTFS partition for Vista, mark it bootable.
4. Create a swap partition.
5. Create home/root partitions.
6. Write changes.
7. Take out Archlinux CD, insert Dell Windows Vista CD, reboot, start from the CD.

This is where I'm worried:

8. Install Vista on /dev/sda1. Will I be able to do that from the Dell Vista CD? Or is it some automatic "erase all HDD, restore to factory default" (retarded partition scheme)?

Also, when Vista is installed on /dev/sda1 and I reboot to install Archlinux, where do I install grub? On the MBR, or on the Archlinux root partition? I guess if I install it on the partition that it won't show up at boot. But if I install it on the MBR, will I still be able to add an entry in grub.conf to boot Vista?

Thanks!

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

It was the same for me ! I first spent a lot of time to get rid of the bad softwares pre-installed by Dell, the ones from Microsoft (IE, WMP,...), and deactivating annoying / ram consuming functions of Vista. Just after that I tried to install Arch and I realized I had to erase everything... sad

What you describe is OK. I was able to do that with Dell CD without any problem. I also did that with Toshiba. I don't remember for Dell, but for Toshiba, you could ONLY install it on sda1, no choice ! Maybe it was the same for Dell. So it is really a good idea to reserve sda1 to Vista.

I installed Grub on the MBR. It automatically detects the Windows partition. You just have to uncomment lines corresponding to Windows in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Yeah I guess that if you install Grub on the root partition, it won't start, only Windows will...

edit : you can also give a try to 2008.04-RC iso. Works great with FTP install (install from CD did not work) and I could do it from a usb stick !

there is a configuration tool in Gnome for that. You can also try with xmodmap like described in the wiki page of m1330.

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

OK. Removed all partitions, created sda1 for Vista, sda2 for swap, sda3 for root and sda4 for home. I installed Arch first (doesn't really matter) when I installed Vista (but then of course I had to boot my Arch installation with the CD again to reinstall grub, but no problems). Works now.

BUT. Heads up: Windows Vista installation (don't know if SP1 solves this, this CD doesn't have SP1) hangs after some reboots when it tries to identify the hardware. I can see the USB devices on the computer link, then the display goes black and goes back on again (detecting the graphics card or whatever), and then it just sits there, doing nothing. No HDD activity or nothing. The solution? Change SATA mode in BIOS _from_ AHCI _to_ ATA.

Just for future reference.

I have a problem though, I can't access the internet from my Arch. Modprobe:ing the bcm43xx module just says "driver loaded" in dmesg, but I don't get wlan0 or eth1 (eth0 is LAN card) or anything, iwconfig etc says "no devices with wireless extensions". Any ideas?

Edit: Doh, need fwcutter for the wlan. Downloading it now, putting it on my USB stick. Hopefully it will work smile

Re: Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

Weird behavior of Vista for your installation. No problem for me ! Did you change the Sata mode before. Did you upgrade the bios ?

Sorry for your wlan, those chips are less convenient on Linux than intel iwl (is there still the choice between those two ?).

Welcome to Arch with your laptop !
