grub install fails (PII 1Ghz, 80gb)

Hi,


ive installed grub with


hd is attached to another pc via usb

mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/test
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/test /dev/sdb

but all i get after booting is:
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB....


/dev/sdb1 is swap
/dev/sdb2 is archlinux including /boot

the drive was working fine in an older Dell (PII 800Mhz)

any ideas?

Hello metalfan
Do you have a /boot/grub/menu.lst file on the /dev/sdb disk ?
Are you sure of the device name in the two machines you use ?

yes, theres a menu.lst, but as far as i remember even if theres none grub presents you a basic "shell"

will check the device names again
