Ok first of all, I had waited a LONG time to use compiz, trying it in spurts here an there and deeming it unfit for daily use. I have tried it again and I think that it is very stable and works constantly and smoothly on my hardware. The only thing that isn't worked out is autostart on my archlinux box. I have tried all manner of things and they all work and they work well, except for a strange issue; they start before nautilus renders the desktop and for some reason once the desktop comes up, the little click and drag box that is used to highlight things in gnome lags behind my mouse. It also uses lots of system resources to do this. The solution is simple: all I have to do to make it back to normal and good is to restart compiz-manager or refresh the window manager in fusion-icon. But I don't want to have to do this. I want it to work perfectly on startup (which i might add has slowed down dramatically recently[maybe becuase of gnome upgrade])
I have tried LOTS of things. What annoys me is that I know it's possible beucase i know that ubuntu works this way with their desktop effects. Unfortunately i also know that they accomplished most of it with patches to gnome and compiz to replace the default window manager with compiz among other things. Maybe we could find out how to make the mods they used in ubuntu work on arch...afterall...arch is the only linux for me! please help guys!

Same here, but i don't know if this issue comes with:
updating gnome to 2.22
installing a newer version of compiz-git
activating metacity-composite in gconf.
Since i build all my compiz packages by myself and keep it in a local repository, i could downgrade compiz to check if it's compiz' fault - it's not.
Now i disabled metacity-composite in gconf and with my next reboot (or xserver restart) i will see if it's the fault of metacity's composite...
*EDIT*
Turning off metacity-composite in gconf solves that issue for me ![]()

Could you please write which gconf you are talking about?

We're talking about gnome, right?
I'm talking about gconf, which you can access via gconf-editor.
At Apps->Metacity->General you'll find an option called "compositing_manager" which should be disabled (It's the default value actually).

OK i found that this only happens when I use emerald...not when I use the gtk-window-decorator. I don't know why though. And mine was already set to not be a composting manager. I want to use emerald though...any more ideas?

I have reset to defaults gnome settings by
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacityand now compiz starts correctly
