I would so greatly appreciate a how-to section of the forum!
I switched over from Ubuntu because of what AL stood for, but the lack of a how-to section such as ubuntu's is very saddening.
I realize the wiki has some good how-to's but it still doesn't come anywhere close to ubuntu's forum user contributed how-tos. I think it would be a great idea to add it here!

Sounds like an interesting idea. It would probably be the ideal place for topics too specific to warrant a wiki entry.

- "Cryptographically secure linear feedback based shift registers" -- a phrase that'll get any party started.
- My AUR packages.
- I use i3 on my i7.

I find the how-tos helpful because they're a collection of random tips users have found, and browsing the how-to can reveal interesting tweaks.
I am pretty much a complete Linux newbie (well not really, I've been using unix on and off for the past 2-3 years with little success, I'm just really stupid when it comes to linux), and I don't think I'd be able to convert a ubuntu how-to commands to arch commands, I do need my hand held out for me with steps. (off-topic, but arch IS for me, don't assume ubuntu works for me simply because I know little of linux. I want a community that supports tweaking and complete customization, which ubuntu does not. Think Gentoo mentality, but with a side of ubuntu easiness, which arch offers.)

I think there is no topic which would be too specific to warrant a wiki entry. In my opinion, this is exacly what wiki is for. Actually, the arch wiki was created out of a howto forum section - just read "a history lesson" in the newsletter.

May I ask you what kind of howto you are missing? I mean actual examples like how to configure sshd or how to configure the X server.
I've been satisfied with the wiki up to now (and the forums covered up for the remaining doubts).
You can steal how-tos from other distributions since all the steps are more or less the same in the end: I enjoy stealing the boring stuff (especially useful shell scripts and font configurations) from gentoo, I took some hidden options for my 3d card from the compiz forums, I learnt how to install ut on linux from ubuntu.

The wiki itself is user contributed: afaik everyone can add his article to arch's wiki.
Of course the ubuntu community is much bigger, but not everything is in numbers.

Arch wiki is very open, so if you find something lacking or want to contribute (write a new article, update the old one) then please don't hesitant to do so! Our wiki could sure use more writer. ![]()

My first thought too, then I thought about bug-fixes/workarounds that are likely temporary. But I guess I didn't quite think it through, as I can't think of anything not warranted in the wiki.
One thing about the Ubuntu How-Tos that goes against the Arch mentality is that they tend to be very "Install A, Edit B and paste text C then click D and you're done." Not very explanatory; Arch probably wants to stay more information oriented than that.

Wiki's where it's at - no need to duplicate stuff. If it was up to me it'd be a nice but decisive no.

I'd like to take this moment to encourage everyone who has the ability to contribute to the wiki.
GOOD DOCUMENTATION IS EVERYTHING.
I believe in good documentation in the *BSD tradition. There's no reason why Arch's documentation can't be even stronger, if we all contribute. I even added a feature request for docs to be added to the Base system: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9902
If you agree that solid documentation is truly a strength to be reckoned with, then do your part. Get involved. Give the "why" as well as the "how". Contribute to the wiki.

Can anyone think of particular articles the wiki is missing? Maybe a Wiki page request wiki page/forum section...

I've switched to Arch about two weeks ago, and already installed it on a good dozen machines. Compared to other distros, the Arch wiki is excellent: IMHO it's a good compromise between verbosity and laconism. But if you absolutely want a HOWTO, here's one:
http://kikinovak.free.fr/archlinux/os/i … -HOWTO.txt
Print it out, pour hot milk chocolate over it, then it looks like the Ubuntu documentation ![]()
