Hello. What are the bare minimum packages I need to install to have a system which boots and can install other packages for itself later?

Basically, everything in the "base" group. You could probably remove more if you really know what you are doing...

Same suggestion, although I take out things like wireless-related packages if I use a wired connection, or pcmcia stuff if it's a desktop, and so forth.

If you don't plan on using certain filesystems other than ext2 and ext3, then you can get rid of the xfs/jfs/reiser related packages.
There are quite a few others I don't install (off the top of my head: encryption ones, RAID, mailx)
