Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

Gigabyte Motherboard
amd Quad core
2 GB Ram
Geforce 9600
running the 32bit arch
---
All i do is, pacman -Sy xorg nvidia
and once it installs i do a sudo nvidia-xconfig, and then i commented out the type1 module ( got that from the forums, thought it might be causing my problems)  The problem is, when  I first do it, everything works great, I can log in, and log out, but after a restart, openbox comes up with artifacts, and the color display is very basic, like windows 95 or something.  Is there any more info you might need?

xorg.conf

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

what else do you need posted, please tell me any logs you need and I will post them.  Also, is the wiki correct on the procedure to install the drivers and set them up?  I always follow it when i install, and with my old nvidia set-up, this never happened.  I know its not a heat issue, and the card is good and functions fine in windows.  Its probably something im doing, the same thing happened in the x86_64 version of arch.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

Since you say it works fine in windows that helps narrow it down considerably, I'm leaning toward it being either a driver issue or something with your xorg configuration. If your not already, try using the 173.08 driver. I'm posting the graphics part of my xorg.conf so you can see what one that dose work looks like though this is with the old Gf6800 and a BenQ17" LCD:

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

Alright, I will look yours over ( im in class at the moment, but I will be home rather soon) can you tell me how you install nvidia and set the driver up, pacman -Sy nvidia, sudo nvidia-xconfig, is what I do, then i comment that type1 out.  Do you use hwd, or do it by hand? Im thinking its a xorg config issue, since it does it to me an donly me, on i686 and x86_64.  So the only thing the same in both situations is me, and how i install the driver.  so that narrows it down to a DEU, defective end user smile

I will also check what driver version i run.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

Get the 173.08 beta driver from http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15152 then do a makepkg and a pacman -U "nvidiadriver". My xorg.conf is usually generated by xorg itself or by nvidia and then I change the graphics section to meat my needs though I recommend you leave yours alone. After installing the driver delete your current xorg and let nvidia-xconfig create a new one for you. Then restart the computer and see if the artifacts come back.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

thank you, im at work right now, I reinstalled ( its a habit  smile ) and im going to do as you suggest, maybe on my lunch break, or def. after work ( 5 pm eastern)  I am sitting at a default install, just waiting on installing xorg and the drivers.  I will do as you suggest. install yaourt, install nvidia-beta, and then nvidia-xconfig it.  I have tried to get nvidia-beta with yaourt, but it always failed, but it was always after nvidia crashed, so i tried to replace it, maybe thats why i cant install the new driver.  Will try again.  I hope it helps since the changelogs says

* Added support for the following new GPUs:
- GeForce 9600 GT

I imagine the driver just wasnt new enough to support my card, thanks for all your help though.

PS - installing with yaourt -S nvidia-beta is the same as doing makepkg and a pacman -U "nvidiadriver" on the abs correct?

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

This seams to be the problem

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!

looks like you stuffed up something when installing the drivers.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

all i did was a yaourt - S nvidia-beta

which also installs nvidia-utils-beta

to isntall that, i had to remove libgl, so i imagine this is the problem, I dont understand how to install nvidia beta, since it conflicts with a file i need.  Any ideas?

the driver is def. installed, so I cant figure out what is going on.  Since im the only person with this problem , I know its something i'm doing.  I just dont get what.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

[justin@myhost ~]$ sudo modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.

I am running on the vesa driver currently, so I dont know if that matters.

also, if it helps.

locate nvidia

/usr/bin/nvidia-bug-report.sh
/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
/usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig
/usr/lib/libnvidia-cfg.so.1
/usr/lib/libnvidia-cfg.so.173.08
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.173.08
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libnvidia-wfb.so.173.08
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so

it seems like its installed. I think it has something to do with removing libgl, even though I dont know how I could have installed with out removing it.,

edit: there is another thread mentioning libgl problems, and they have these commands posted, so I am running them and posting my output, the second one differs from what the poster said was the 'correct' output

that was after this last upgrade.

Also, I can run nvidia-settings, and the program loads, so, something is installed smile

Atleast its not just me, I did a fresh reinstall, and it gave me the same warning as before, the libgl conflict.  Is there any work around currently for this?

Run this, and remove the libgl package - nvidia-utils replaces it.

depmod -a

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

This is another new install. lol

You want me to remove libgl, then run that command? or Run that command, then remove libgl?  Sorry for being dense, I just dont want to do it wrong.  Then after that is all said and done, install nvidia-beta.

pacman -S xorg
depmod -a
pacman -R libgl
yaourt -S nvidia-beta
sudo nvidia-xconfig
startx

hopefully it all goes as planned smile

also, what is the best way to remove that libgl, without removing anything else?  pacman -R,  pacman -Rd, pacman -Rcsn?

off-topic - I swear, since the old driver works until I reboot, I actually got to see how awesome this card can be, so I know what i have, i just cant have it lol.  Thanks for everyones help so far.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

"depmod" only cares about kernel modules, and libgl is just a library file, not a kernel module. However, nvidia-beta is a kernel module, so use this order:

pacman -Rd libgl
yaourt -S nvidia-beta
depmod (the "-a" option don't exist any longer, it seems from its manpage)

The nvidia-beta package should have a .install file that runs depmod itself.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

Did what you said then rebooted, and tried to run your commands and then run use the nvidia driver, still doesnt work.  Here is the output - Its defnitily is installed, the kernel just doesnt seem to see the driver,  or something.

[justin@myhost ~]$ sudo depmod
[justin@myhost ~]$
[justin@myhost ~]$ sudo depmod nvidia
WARNING: Can't read module nvidia: No such file or directory
[justin@myhost ~]$ sudo depmod -a nvidia

error: cannot determine ownership of a directory
/lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko is owned by kernel26 2.6.25-1
[justin@myhost ~]$

[justin@myhost ~]$ yaourt -Qs nvidia
local/nvidia-beta 173.08-2
   NVIDIA beta drivers for kernel26.
local/nvidia-utils-beta 173.08-2
NVIDIA beta drivers utilities and libraries.

As you can see it still doesnt work, im worried about the fact it says no such file or directory, also it says it cant determine ownership.

In the AUR - they said i need to "mod probe it, then check dmesg" i tried those commands, and then looked at dmesg - and their is a whole bunch of Info about my PC, but nothing like looks like anything to me.

nvidiafb ("fb" = "framebuffer") is not nvidia.

$ find /lib/modules/ -name nvidia\*
/lib/modules/2.6.25/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

$ pacman -Qo /lib/modules/2.6.25/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.25/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko is owned by nvidia 173.08-1

I compile my own custom kernel, which does not include nvidiafb.ko - just to explain why I haven't got it wink

any idea to why I would have a the 'failed to read' ?

that file isnt there either,  but since the nvidia-beta and nvidia-beta-utils are both installed i cant figure out why.

$ pacman -Ql nvidia | grep ko
nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.25/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

Set _kernver in the nvidia PKGBUILD - see thread.

Re: Nvidia driver works, but crashes after a reboot.

ok thanks for the post back, I am not running a custom kernel, just the stock x86_64 one, do i still need to do this( I didnt know if you thought i was or not)?  if so, can you please explain a little more what exactly i am doing?  Sorry for being so dense about this, I just dont want to screw anything up by my own ignorance.

in this pkgbuild, i should replace all isntaces of '_kernver' with x86_64 or something else?
so this make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${_kernver}/build module , becomes make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${x86_64}/build module

heh, sorry if im totally messing this up.  Never had this issue before, BUT, i have learned a few good commands, dmesg and mod probe, also the find command.  So thanks, you dont have to help so im very thankfull you are.
