keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I booted Arch on my laptop yesterday, and no keys worked. I couldn't login or anything. Only key or button that worked is the on/off button. I booted Arch 3 times to make sure.
Not one key worked when pressed. Nothing!

I don't know what happened or where to start looking. Arch is up to date and had been working fine.
Laptop works fine on other distro and xp.

I can mount the partition from other distro, but where do I start looking for problem. Arch booted fine and I have login prompt.

Thanks.

Just did a cold boot to work on the problem and it booted fine. All keys work as should.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Just to test your scenario, plug an external keyboard and see if it works.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I don't have a serial or usb keyboard sad
I'm not working either, so can't buy one sad

If there's another way to do it, then I don't know...I've not used laptop very much.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

After using Arch for a while, decided to reboot and see how it was working, but the problem happened again. Rebooted into pclinuxos, everything worked fine, so rebooted again into Arch and now everything works.
Seems like something doesn't get loaded at times?

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Do you have other distros/systems on your pc also?
My problem is Arch specific. I have the pre-installed xp, Slackware, PCLinuxOS, and *bsd on the laptop and only Arch is affected sad

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I take that you both have: xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard installed. Correct?

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

of course:) i suspect that it can be caused by kdm or maybe catalyst drivers. i removed kdm from daemons in rc.conf and i'm starting kde by startx, so far (3 times booting arch) keyboard works fine.

I would believe that the catalist drivers could cause the problem but *not* KDM itself. I use it in my laptop (and all the desktops) to start KDE from the daemons list and works fine.

Edit: As a matter of fact, there seems to be some issues with catalyst ... see here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 86#p357586

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

On my laptop, I log in at console. I don't run *dm.
I can't even log in when the keyboard doesn't function (note OP).

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Not on the laptop right now. Will try tomorrow. Might contain some extra since I can only hit the off button sad
I have reboot till it locks up and then boot into Slack and read/copy it.

Weird that it hasn't done this in the past year or so that I've had Arch on the laptop sad

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

ok. i found solution for my problem (i think).
in /var/log/kdm.log i found:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning:          Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
>                   Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

i found solution in google and add this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf,  Section "InputDevice"

Option    "XkbOptions"  "lv3:ralt_switch_multikey"

so far keyboard works fine..

Again, as noted in original post, other systems boot fine. Only problem is with Arch and it just started. Arch has been running fine, till the time of my first post on the problem.
Also, when Arch boot and the keyboard works, then the system runs like a champ. Just every so often, this problem/feature appears.
Thanks.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Hi!

I had the same problem. I started kdm as a daemon in rc.conf. The problem disappeared when I started kdm with inittab instead.

Check out this wikipage:
Adding a login manager (KDM, GDM, or XDM) to automatically boot on startup

Maybe it works for you?

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I don't use kdm. kdm is not in my rc.conf.
This is a console login.
See post #11   wink

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Oh, sorry, thought you meant you didn't use *dm since keyboard didn't work there.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Still having the same problem sad
Will have to use Slackware for some weeks/months and then try again after a -Syu.  Maybe something will be upgraded that will fix this phantom problem/feature wink
Thanks for all the tries at helping.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I have the exact same problem. Arch was working fine. But today (I tried 10 times) I just can't log in because the keyboard doesn't respond. Yes, no console login, without xserver. The keyboard works fine in the grub boot menu, but when arch is started, it doesn't. this sucks

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

Try pressing at boot time "e" and then add 'noapic' to  the kernel line (at the end). Then press "b" to boot.
I had a similar problem just today with the installer and that did the trick.

Hope that helps.

Re: keyboard doesn't respond after booting

I think I have the same problem, every now and then my keyboard stops working, except the special keys (home/mail/etc) still work and Ctrl-Atl-Backspace still stops xorg, and when I restart X manually it all works fine. I think the fault is somewhere in xorg. (I use slim to login)
