xbindkeys

I think I have followed the instructions in the wiki for hotkey setup.
However, for the volume keys to work, I have to boot up, then ctrl-alt-backspace. Then they work fine.
What am I missing?
I followed the instructions for starting an application in X.

Re: xbindkeys

If you run 'xbindkeys -n' from command line, they stay in foreground and you can see if they produce any error messages.

Re: xbindkeys

Run "ps ax | grep xbindkeys" to see if it is running.

[duncan@myhost ~]$ ps ax | grep xbindkeys
 4228 ? S 0:00 gedit file:///home/duncan/.xbindkeysrc
 4236 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep xbindkeys

Is it?

Re: xbindkeys

Yep, xbindkeys not running. In my experience, when you edit .xbindkeysrc file, you need to restart xbindkeys after that (killall xbindkeys; xbindkeys).

Re: xbindkeys

Run xbindkeys in ~/.xprofile - see xprofile in wiki.

Re: xbindkeys

where do I find the ./xprofile file?

If it is supposed to be in home folder, I don't have it.

Re: xbindkeys

Well then just create it. And read carefully, it's supposed to be ~/.xprofile and not ./xprofile.

How? Your link doesn't appear to tell me.

I created the ~./xprofile

Re: xbindkeys

Am I supposed to put that in a terminal? It gives me an error when I do.

Re: xbindkeys

Just reread the above suggestions:
1. run "xbindkeys" or "xbindkeys -n" from terminal, and post errors (if any) it gives. If it doesn't give any errors, your xbindkeys should be running fine and you should be able to use the shortcuts.
2. Once you get your xbindkeys set up correctly, so that you are able to run them from command line and shortcuts work, you can make it to be run automatically by putting it into .xprofile; this can be accomplished by running "gedit ~/.xprofile" and entering "xbindkeys", pressing enter, saving the file and exiting the editor. Next time your restart X, xbindkeys should be run automatically. Once again: the file name is: .xprofile (it begins with a dot) and resides in your home directory. It is *not* ~./xprofile.

Re: xbindkeys

@Raccoon1400 I did not want to confuse things, from what I read in wiki .xprofile is for keys that do not work in X .... get xbindkeys running first check its config file and test bindings then add the ones you want....

Re: xbindkeys

I appear to have gotten xbindkeys to start properly. The problem seems to be I haven't configured the volume buttons properly.

Re: xbindkeys

I got the volume buttons configured. Is there a way to make the volume box pop up at the bottom of the screen pop up when I use them, like in windows and ubuntu?

same idea as this:
