Using AwesomeWM, how do I make windows look good?

I tried using gnome-settings-daemon in .xinitrc but that doesn't work.

What do you mean by "look good"?
I suppose you use applications using GTK, since you added the gnome thingy. If it's the GTK theme that is looking good you might want to use "switch2" to change the theme.

I do not want to be rude, but honestly if you do not know what gtk theme is, start from Gnome or *box. I think awesome wm is not the better choice for you.

Please post how you got it working.

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.
