joystick versus screensaver

hello,

when I am playing a game using only joystick, the X Window System thinks I am not doing anything and blanks the screen after some time (and I need to hit a key to get the picture back, meanwhile some monster in the game might kill me...)

I am using mostly Dosbox and emulators like xmame, gens, snes9x

what should I do to tell X the joystick exists?
