erm, not for me. I am getting this, but with USB drives and kio. I try to "unmount" a drive and I get this error.
Error - kio_media_mounthelper
"The device was successfully unmounted, but could not be ejected"
After a lot of troubleshooting my groups has grown to this:
groups
disk lp wheel network video audio optical floppy storage scanner camera power usersWhen I try to eject as user I get this:
eject: unable to eject, last error: Invalid argumenteject as root works
Is this a bug? Can I do anything else to troubleshoot?
I am using kdemod.

Hello,
I don't know if this will help or if you have already done it but I use Fluxbox and HAL and I had a real problem getting my dvd drive to eject.
If I pushed the button on the drive nothing happened and if I gave the 'eject' command I got a:
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for deviceUsing 'sudo eject' would work, but only if I typed 'mount /media/dvd' first, which is rather odd since the mount failed (presumably because of HAL, since I always used to mount/umount manually). Also if it did eject it would suck back in so quick I couldn't pull out the disc for fear of it getting stuck.
Anyhow I went into /etc/fstab and commented out all the dvd, cdrom, and floppy entries like so:
# /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
# /dev/cdrom1 /media/cdrom1 auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
# /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
# /dev/dvd1 /media/dvd1 auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
# /dev/fd0 /media/fd0 auto user, noautoAnd now it ejects just fine with the 'eject' command and the button on the drive. Also 'eject -t' closes it just fine. I remembered reading somewhere that said entries should be commented out for HAL and had never done it. I hope this solves your problem. Good luck.

Well this is odd. I used the above fix and it worked fine several times and is now not working again. Only works with 'sudo eject' now, and even then sucks right back in. Also if I restart I can eject it (obviously).
alleyoopster:
Also sorry, I should have read your post better, since you are using usb drives. Though if you have an entry for those maybe that would help.
Does anyone else have any ideas on this matter? Thanks.

It may be worth mentioning that I found this thread on the Ubuntu forums offering a fix for what is said to be a known bug in HAL in 7.04:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=499090
It basically says to give this command:
sudo mv /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-storage-policy.fdi /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-storage-policy.fdi.backupThe only problem with this is that I do not have a '10-storage-policy.fdi'. Also isn't that simply making a .backup of said file while deleting the original? I have no idea why that would work. Or why I don't have said file for that matter. Just an Ubuntu thing perhaps?
Does anyone else have that file? Also if that did fix the problem then wouldn't it mean that 'something' was pointing at the backup version of said file instead? If so, would not the better method be to point whatever is looking in the wrong place to the right place instead of what that command does? Just a thought.
This doesn't help me at all but perhaps it will give someone else an idea.
I should also mention that I am running Arch64 in case that has any bearing on this. Thanks.

Just realized something else here. This DVD drive worked fine until i put in a dvd. By that I mean I burned a CD earlier and it opened and closed fine. Also I have two DVD drives and the second one works fine, even after putting in a DVD. Rather odd I think.
I was thinking perhaps it is a permissions issue, but I am not sure what I would chown/chmod to fix it. Or what permissions (ie. the chmod number) to give it. Any ideas on that? Thanks.
