I've never used this utility before, but I'm assuming it should output some sort of bar graph. It doesn't. Am I doing something wrong or is my printer not supported?

not likely related, I was having trouble getting complete printouts from acroread today. It would print about 3/4 of the first page then just stop. CUPS said the job completed successfully. I thought it was a USB cable, but it works fine in Ubuntu and I had trouble with two cables and all my laptop's usb ports. I was able to print from firefox just now (receipt for new ink ;-) without any trouble. What gives?
