I believe that the Alsa bug has been fixed by version 1.0.16.
There was a patch made by a Ubuntu user, details here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=572081&page=4
though I really don't believe that it is necessary anymore.
I'm hoping that some knowledgeable person may hold my hand through this one, or point me to the relevant information?
Thanks in advance.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!

Hi handy,
If the bug has been fixed, what might be your problem. Could you give more details as to how I could help you?

Thank you Aperculum for your reply & kind offer. :-)
I am using Gnome, the volume control is present but has the muted red cross beside it, changing the volume has no effect.
Alsamixer has Card: HDA Intel & Chip: Realtek ALC885, which I believe is correct. There is no Master Volume or Master M, control in Alsamixer, there are only actually 8 controls Alsamixer & the PCM is stuck at 100% & won't move! lol
lspci -nn, shows:
Audio device [0403]: Intel Corp' 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)
Which is correct I believe.
If I can give you anymore information please instruct me & I will happily supply it for you.

Hi,
Are you using the digital output. If you are, try checking if IEC958 Output is enabled and IEC958 Playback is set to zero. I'm not sure how else
I could help you so I'm just giving general help, if it worked

Thanks for your post, but your suggestion unfortunately made no change to the situation.
I have another more serious problem to do with gnome & account passwords, which I can't discover the cause of, though I have found ways to work around the problem, it is still not satisfactory. So, I'm going to do a reinstall, which is certainly not as quick & easy as a Ubuntu or Sabayon install, but you do get out what you put in with Arch eventually...
I do like the rolling release system of Arch. :-)
Thanks again, I'll go down the re-installation track now.

Well, I sorted out the iMac 20" & 24" sound problem a while back the solution follows:
Add the following to /etc/modprobe.conf
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3
Restart computer or the sound system.
