are you running the alsa daemon? iirc, levels wont be restored if you do not.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

alsa-daemon? did u meant /etc/rc.d/alsa ? yes,it is running,
but confusing thing is there is only a ~/.esd_auth ,no .esd dir or files!

this is getting on my nerve!tried almost everything.still,I have to unmute Gnome-volume control!someone,any idea?

install alsa-utils, set your volume from gnome-volume or alsamixer and put alsa to DAEMON list
btw unmute your volume before restarting. /etc/rc.d/alsa saves your volumes at stop
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

It's also worth noting the Alsa wiki page makes mention of this command to restore volume levels at startup: alsactl store

heh!I had tried already alsactl -d store with vol control!.now esd added to daemon list;already installed alsa-utils,alsa-libs before installing Gnome itself!now :?
hey!it a ac97 card(intel8x0 driver).nothing tough!
root ~ # hwdetect --sound
MODULES=(ac97_bus snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-ac97-codec snd-intel8x0 soundcore)
^shows what is loaded.
Please tell me,How can I fix gnome-applets package :?:
It seems Gnome-applets may be buggy as when I tried adding trash applet on current session,it doesnt showed up until reboot next session.
Is Gnome-2.22 that buggy?no whining,but Gnome2.22 on Debian Sid works perfect!
