Tons and tons of processes..

Hey,

When typing 'ps ax' I can see tons and tons of processes.
I have no idea what all those processes do, or where "they came from" (meaning, how they got initialized).

Is there some place where the default processes arch starts is listed and explained?

If not - do you have any idea where I can learn about all those processes?

thanks
fiod

Re: Tons and tons of processes..

Excuse me?

Most of that stuff is stuff you or your desktop environment launched. I think the stuff is pretty self-explanatory. If you want you can google each command/program's name or look them up locally on your system.

Have fun!

Re: Tons and tons of processes..

if you use the -H flag, processes are arranged in a tree, where children are aligned further to the right. That way it's easy to see what started what. I think (don't trust me on this) that all user processes are descendants of the "init" process.

Re: Tons and tons of processes..

They are. Htop has a tree view too that does a nice job too.
