Sound Dies When Computer Starts Up

Ever since I switched my sound system to OSS, KDE's sound system would just die as my computer starts up.  When I log in, I usually start up kmix so I have it on the system tray, but it doesn't start up.  Trying to start it from the command line gives me this error message:

******************** WARNING *******************************
Warning! kmix uses ALSA emulation instead of the native OSS API
****************************************************************

kmix: relocation error: /opt/kde/lib/libkdeinit_kmix.so: symbol snd_mixer_free, version ALSA_0.9 not defined in file libasound.so.2 with link time reference
ERROR: Communication problem with kmix, it probably crashed.

So far, the only thing that works to get the sound system running is reinstalling the kdemod-kdemultimedia packages.  Anyone know of a better solution?
