Editing user info for existing user

I have a fresh installation of Arch i686 running with GNOME 2.22. I made a typo making the user account I use in my real name and I would like fix that. How can I edit my user info, i.e. not my username but my info?

Regards

André

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

I just checked man usermod. It seems like you change your login but I can't that you can change your real way. Is there a GUI way to edit the info maybe? Running gnome-about-me doesn't show my real name.

What package does chpass belong to in Arch? I can't see how this helps me change my real name?

I did that and that worked. But I have a problem with GDM. I using a greeter with that shows the list of users on my pc. For some reason my user's name is wriiten

Andr?

and not

André as it should be. For some reason GDM ignores my locale setting or utf-8. How do I make it recognise é?

Re: Editing user info for existing user

In my case, trying to set my full name on my user account with

chfn -f <my name here>

gives the following:

chfn: Permission denied.

I went ahead and edited /etc/passwd, which got the job done.

I'm still curious to know why the real name / full name is not editable via chfn, though.

(I noticed this issue a long time ago, but didn't get sufficiently bothered by it until I used GNOME's Lock Screen function and discovered the Leave message dialog was saying "Leave a message for :", with nothing in place of the full name. Of course this isn't the most useful of features, but it's the principle of the thing...)
