[solved] Time discrepancy

Hi guys!

Since I installed Arch, I have a problem with my clock. It's either an hour in advance or, as it is now, two hours in advance. Here's my rc.conf file :

#
# /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux
#

#
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# LOCALIZATION
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# LOCALE: available languages can be listed with the 'locale -a' command
# HARDWARECLOCK: set to "UTC" or "localtime"
# TIMEZONE: timezones are found in /usr/share/zoneinfo
# KEYMAP: keymaps are found in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps
# CONSOLEFONT: found in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts (only needed for non-US)
# CONSOLEMAP: found in /usr/share/kbd/consoletrans
# USECOLOR: use ANSI color sequences in startup messages
#
LOCALE="en_CA.utf8"
HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
TIMEZONE="America/Montreal"
KEYMAP="cf"
CONSOLEFONT="default8x16"
CONSOLEMAP=
USECOLOR="yes"

#

# Module Blacklist - modules in this list will never be loaded by udev
MOD_BLACKLIST=(pcspkr)
#
# Modules to load at boot-up (in this order)
#   - prefix a module with a ! to blacklist it
#
MODULES=(fglrx ndiswrapper vboxdrv fuse b44 mii snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore acpi-cpufreq vboxdrv usblp)
# Scan for LVM volume groups at startup, required if you use LVM
USELVM="no"

#
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# NETWORKING
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
HOSTNAME="cipher"
#
# Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available
# interfaces.
#
# Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
# - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
# - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
#
# Note: to use DHCP, set your interface to be "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
#
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
wlan0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0 !wlan0)

#
# Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each route then list in ROUTES
# - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
#

#
# Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
# if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
# - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up (dialog package required)
# - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
#
# Network profiles are found in /etc/network-profiles
#
NET_PROFILES=()

#
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# DAEMONS
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# Daemons to start at boot-up (in this order)
#   - prefix a daemon with a ! to disable it
# - prefix a daemon with a @ to start it up in the background
#
DAEMONS=(hal dhcdbd networkmanager laptop-mode @fam @alsa syslog-ng !network @httpd @mysqld @cups @openntpd @net-profiles @netfs @crond @acpid @cpufreq gdm)

# End of file

I tried setting my hardware clock to both localtime and UTC with no result. I even tried changing my timezone, which didn't work either. For some reason, Arch is not able to get the good time. Oh, by the way, I also tried with open-ntp.

I installed Ubuntu in a VM to test it out and even it got the time right...

Re: [solved] Time discrepancy

Same thing happened to me and i tried every tricks peoples suggested me, none of them worked. I simply linked my timezone with the /etc/localtime file. It work great.

rm /etc/localtime
cp -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Montreal /etc/localtime

Well, thanks for the help, but it didn't work.

However,  I have a question. Are those files supposed to be human-readable? Because when I tried to see what what inside those files, I ended up seeing :

Re: [solved] Time discrepancy

Read the file with:

zdump -v /etc/localtime | grep 2008

Sync to the correct time immediately (rather than taking days), using rdate:

rdate -s ntp.demon.co.uk

Re: [solved] Time discrepancy

Thank YOU!

It worked quite well. I just had to play to install from AUR, but that's another problem, right!

Thanks a lot.
